Oil filter cap damaged

    Hi folks. I've run into issues with my Auris Hybrid and I'm looking for some advice as to what was the cause and what damage has been done.
    The story:
    The car had an oil change 10.000 miles ago (last September) at the Toyota stealership (with papers to prove it)
    Two weeks ago, my mechanic friend did the oil change, (0w20 Toyota oil). When he removed the oil filter cap, he said "man, this thing is so overtightened, can't believe it". In the end he got it off and finished the oil change, he specifically mentioned he did not overtighten it at all. Everything was fine for two weeks.
    Until yesterday when after leaving my parkway, the main display goes black and a red oil lamp appears.
    I stop the car in the middle of the road and I check the dipstick. It was all dry. I had an extra liter of oil from the change so it put it all in. Still, the dipstick is dry.
    I call my mech friend, thankfully he was only a few miles away. I drive using the ICE as little as possible.
    After investigation, the oil filter cap is cracked and it's been leaking heavily (I've left a trail of oil coming in his driveway, about a drop every couple of feet)
    He's used some kind of adhesive (Poxipol) to seal the crack and it seems not to leak anymore. I've left the car there overnight, and I'll return with 4 bottles of 0w20 oil to fill it back up and hopefully I'll be able to drive it.
    I'll try to buy a replacement cap and hopefully be fine.

    The question now is:what caused the cap to crack? just normal wear or has it been overtightened by the stealership mechanic? have I done any damage to the engine?

    There is just as good a chance the cap cracked as it was being loosened by your mechanic.

    I did the "spin on" conversion and never had to deal with that plastic filter cap again.

    When I got my 2010 last year, could not get the oil filter cap off in my driveway, even with massive breaker bar. Previous owner changed oil every 4-5000 miles at Jiffy Lube and similar. Had a warranty job to get done, dealer loosened the cap for me, most of the teeth were chipped off. Put on a new cap.I was driving Uber and was changing oil a lot so planned to do the oil filter conversion then COVID parked the car. Will probably still do it when things open up. Will used Amayama, highly recommend!

    And Canada :). Google Amayama. These are the parts I ordered. There are several versions of the spin-on bracket that will work; this itteration is one of them:

    The first highlighted item is the main bracket.

    The second is a threaded tube that screws into it. I believe I used 20 ft/lbs for that. You need a 12 mm Allen-Key type socket for that/

    The third item is the two O-rings. You could probably reused the o-rings on their, but cheap insurance to replace.

    You could also order replacement bolts (4?), but reusing the original bolts is fine. Torque for those bolts is 19 ft/lb IIRC, indicated in the Repair Manual.

    When ordering through Amayama, try to choose options to order only from one country, to avoid two shipping charges. It's typically UAE or Japan. FWIW, so far they've never charged sales tax or duty. The only extra is the shipping charge, which is clearly indicated. It took a week or two for orders; might be longer now due to COVID.

    Note too with the above order: I threw in a few (unrelated) extra items. If you can think of anything, and it's cheap through Amayama, throw it in and make the most of the one order.
