We are having record temperatures here in Phoenix lately. 113F (45C) today. I recently replaced two cells within my battery pack that had shorted out (voltage was still good, but it was throwing the P0AA6 code). It has been about a week and I have put about 150 miles on it with no code and no problems. Up until this afternoon it was driving perfectly normally.

This afternoon, as I started the car, the battery went from 5 bars down to one bar in about half a mile, which isn't that unusual as the AC is running full blast and the driving is relatively slow through residential streets and the battery is old. What was different is once I got on the freeway the battery stayed at 1 bar for about 10 minutes of highway driving. The ICE sounded like it was running full throttle at 70mph (112 kph). Also, the car felt VERY sluggish and severely hesitated when I came off the line. I have the Dr. Prius app on my phone and was monitoring the battery temperature as I drove. It showed it was charging the whole time but the battery temperature got up to 137F (58C). I could hear the battery fan blowing full blast the whole time. The fan is clean (I checked in when I repaired the battery). It eventually settled down and started behave more normal after about 20 minutes as the battery came down to 125F (52C). No codes came up at any time.

I'm wondering if the Prius recognizes the battery is too hot and limits the current available the the MG1 and MG2 to protect the battery? Or is this a sign of something more serious? Has anyone else who lived in a very hot climate experienced this kind of behavior?

Yes, the hybrid battery always has a charge current limit and a discharge current limit. These are reported as kw limits on techstream and most apps. They're variable limits based on current conditions, including battery temperature and state of charge (and whatever else Toyota felt like including). A very hot battery or a very cold battery will have the current limits significantly reduced. Normal full power operation limits are 25kw if I remember correctly. Again, if I remember correctly, I've seen it limited as far as 15kw, on a bitter cold day, but I suppose it could be even more since many locations are much more severe than SC.

Those limits will change as the battery warms up or cools down.

Thank you! That helps knowing this. I'm sure a battery that hot is not a good thing, but at least the car is taking care of itself as best it can. I'm wondering if there is a way to set the temperature that kicks the fan to high to something lower. It is like it is trying to play catch up the whole time with this brutal heat.

if i presume the current limit described by TMR-JWAP is listed as [PRIUS]HV Battery Charge(kW) and [PRIUS]HV Battery Disharge(kW) in Torque app, then...according to data from my 2007 prius..

when ambient temp is about 100f, discharge limit is about 106kw. charge limit is about 15 kw.
when ambient temp is about 60f, discharge limit is about 106kw, charge limit is about 25kw.
when ambient temp is about 40f, discharge limit is about 97kw, charge limit is about 30kw.

i am using cylindrical batteries from newpriusbatteries, and my HV batteries are usually about 0 to 15 degrees f above ambient.
