My 2007 has had minor, intermittent shuddering for a while, mostly noticeable at idle. Today it went full-fledged rocket ship on me. We’re talking horrible, violent shuddering. I had it towed to my dealer and it was diagnosed as needing al four spark plugs replaced, one “coil” replaced, and a throttle flush.

My issue is that I had a weekend trip planned and the damn coil won’t arrive until Monday. The tech said he doesn’t want to put aftermarket in and that even if I wanted to throw an aftermarket in just for the weekend, it would still be a $100 part. Is this correct? I’m insanely upset to miss the trip.

90% chance it just needs new spark plugs...........10% chance a coil is bad...100% chance he's throwing in a throttle body cleaning to make a few extra bucks.

Regardless, this is a 45 minute job in my driveway, but your situation is what tends to happen when you put things off. Murphy's Law says it will screw you at the worst possible time. .say hello to Murphy...

and a coil is a $5 part at a salvage yard. $19 to $52 for a new one on RockAuto.com depending on brand.

Is there a notice somewhere for new posters:

Whatever you do make sure you don’t post how many miles on the car.

Alright guys, chill a bit. I was stressed last night when I posted. My car has roughly 150k miles and I'm in central PA.

When a coil on plug ignitor fails it makes a G2 engine sound really bad shaking and knocking. So bad coil for sure.

Plugs are 50,000 miles overdue and hopefully they will do a good job cleaning the TB. I would get the water pump belt replaced thats also 50,000 miles overdue.
Because if that falls off you will never know it and then the water pump stops working the engine will go into severe overheat and you will never know till you see the engine light come on. Too late head damage and possible blown motor.
No temp gauge on the dash really stupid design thats deadly if not managed......by you.

Whenever you take the car to the dealer first thing they will do is hook there tester to the obd port and pull the codes the car has thrown.
Codes are the lights you saw on the dash. You must get those codes in writing since it will tell you exactly why the car is unhappy.
You paid for those. Demand them. This visit will probably be around $700 I bet. They'll get you for at least 3 hours. My dealer for instance is $140 an hour.
Ask around try to find an independent mechanic the guy i use is $80 and hour. No big deal for plugs and coil like any other car dealer not needed.

First thing we will ask you for is the codes. With those we can help you.

In the future go on Youtube theirs literally hundreds of Prius repair videos and will give you a good sense of what may be going wrong with your car.

Lastly and more bad news be vigilant on the condition of the hybrid battery as mileage wise you are right in the sweet spot of starting to see hybrid battery degradation. Going to purple bar real fast at a light and then takes a long time to get back to blue bars, poor power poor mileage.
Al of those are not good and signs of battery failure.

Letting a high mileage 13 year old prius sit is death to the hybrid battery.

That battery is very expensive and the car wont start without it. They are dropping like fly's on this site. Dealer cost is $5000 installed.

Drive that car everyday or you will kill the hybrid battery and the 12 volt battery.

    Good luck.

Ed, thanks for the helpful info. Already got my car back from the dealer ($500) but next time it's in for anything I'll get the water pump replaced. I was reading on a blog yesterday -- would have to find it again -- that at 150k miles the coils and some sort of fluid should be replaced. Not sure what the fluid was though.

Would you have them preemptively replace the remaining three coils also? (They charged $137 for an off-market coil).

I drive my car daily so no worries there.

My only other question is, can you clarify the blue vs. purple bars? Is that in the screen or something on the dash itself?

What pisses me off is that paying a PREMIUM for my dealer to service my car, they SHOULD HAVE done a tune-up at 100k. Why the hell didn't they?

What is an off market coil? Your at the dealer its a oem denso coil.

You want to pay attention to the energy monitor on the multi function display the screen above the radio. It will show you the hybrid battery behavior both in charge and discharge. It will soon be the most important screen you have ever watched.

Because your car like mine is 13 years old and way way past end of life for that battery.
It powers the entire car. When it fails the car will not start. There failing left and right including mine.

Dealer cost is $5000. There's a few alternatives less expensive and much more sketchy.

Peruse the forums hybrid battery failure in a G2 is a very common post. Its just time. Start reading because its going to happen to you.

Ed, when you say to watch the battery monitor -- what am I looking for?
