Something bad is happening. The initial report was about the UK seeing a significant uptick.

I quickly surveyed several EU counties and it isn’t just the UK. Mask fatigue? More indoor time? New strain crossing EU borders?

    Not good.

There are no uniform mask rules around European countries.
Here in the Netherlands they are only mandatory when using public transport.
So you see hardly anyone on the street or in shops with masks.
Germany is a bit stricter with mask rules for shops.

To many people are starting to think that it wasn't all that bad.
Our Dutch government isn't very clear on the regulations. For some strange reasons weddings, funerals and religious gatherings are exempt from the rules stating how many people can get together at events.

same problems here, and i'm noticing uptick in the states with initial problems and then somewhat under control. the numbers are still fairly small, but if they are related to a resumption of school and sports and weather, it doesn't bode well

Testing capacity is just about maxed out here as well.
The big cities with universities are hotspots at the moment, students tend to live close together and like to party...
People are done with Covid but the virus isn't done with us for the foreseeable future.

... especially when herd immunity has never been demonstrated for any coronavirus variety in humans. And the examples set by them are not encouraging. Mild coronaviruses varieties cause about 20% of common colds, and any acquired immunities from them appear to be short-lived.

short lived based on what data? Other than a handful - multiple infections seem to mostly be anecdotal.

all the best to those who've had it, and to those who'll get it. i feel bad for those who have to work and accept the consequences, and mad at those who consistently put themselves in harms way, making it worse for the rest of us.
there are long term consequences for the whole world because of them

Well, I tested positive for COVID-19, and did everything I could to have avoided it. I'm >65, and was concerned about how I would respond if infected at my age. I wore masks whenever going to public places, stayed as far away from others as possible, and generally stayed home as much as possible.

I fortunately had very mild symptoms - sore throat, nasal congestion, some fatigue, and I did lose sense of smell and taste for about 5 days.

Actually, the worst part was being quarantined for 2 weeks!

Glad to hear of your quick recovery. Yeah, sometimes the virus is just not avoidable. May not be serious illness for many, but for a few unfortunate people, it is deadly.

    Stay well everyone.

recently donated blood do the Red Cross. They said I had antibodies. Narry a symptom. Thinking back retroactively - a coincidence? I was peeing extremely frequently for several days, & upon reading up on fringe symptoms, yeah, that was one. So, one would normally say there were no symptoms, but technically maybe there was?
    On a much more significant Note, news out of Scotland;
Is Scotland overcounting the number of patients in hospital beds? - CEBM
Error ratio decreases death 5 to 1?
Despite many thinking that only lowbrow/right wing conservatives downplay the seriousness, Scotland is a left-leaning government, so it would be a strain to blame their governments reassessments on the right - as is sometimes the case.
This raises the question, how many other countries, provinces, States, municipalities - may be in need of reassessing. Is there some inborn fear that if the disease isn't taken seriously (reassessing) that lowering statistics will have a negative impact worse than the sociological economic impact?

we've had the same data problems here among the states, there is no standard for reporting. here in ma, they changed the standards several times, trying to get it right, but that makes past data difficult to compare to current and future.
in the end, it's all about surge, and having enough beds and equipment and personnel for sick people, whatever they've got.

There are many examples of both overcounting and undercounting. It isn't immediately clear what the net end result is.

But the hints I've seen suggest that the undercounts predominate. Somewhere in these threads is a link to details showing a significant number of "excess deaths" this year compared to previous years, well beyond the declared Covid-19 deaths. Other articles are pointing to a fair chunk of the excess being collateral damage, indirect pandemic-related deaths of people who didn't have the virus. E.g. dementia patients dying faster due to getting less care than in pre-covid days (due to difficulties / time consumption / staffing shortages related to covid precautions), more stroke and heart attack deaths from people delaying seeking urgent care due to fear catching the virus at the treatment facilities, etc.

But the final accounting will need to also account for reduced traffic deaths from less traffic, reduced flu deaths from the shortened season (thanks to covid precautions), etc. Such an analysis will come well after the fact, not anytime soon.

'ma loosens rules as boston closes in on red zone cases'

cities are struggling while suburbs and rural are holding their own. too soon to say what the effects of school openings will be, but many are still virtual.

one surprise (to me) is professional sports.
