Battery Questions (Sanity Check)

    So, I recently got my hands on a 2005 Prius in Auction. Has about 190k miles on it. When it was delivered, had a dead 12 volt. So I attempted to jump, and nothing would start. I then reconditioned the 12 volt, battery is fine, car started, but would not shift into drive. And had Red Triangle, as well as following: Check Engine, Traction Control, ABS, and the circle ! thingie.

    I purchased a carista, and downloaded Dr. Prius to look at codes. Got this code and cleared it.[​IMG]

    Now car starts fine, can shift into drive, and was able to drive around the block. Dr. Prius doesn't give me the detail code, so this would be my first question. After watching


    I now know what to narrow down to if code comes back.


    Now for the actual questions that I had. Below is some screenshots from the app that I took, and wanted some feedback on.

    This was the one I wanted to highlight, since I saw Blocks 1 and 2 jump up so high. And I was able to replicate hence the screen shot. I followed up with a full battery test from the app, as shown below

    So, the final question I have, aka the sanity check. I'm thinking I should definitely replace block 3, and while its out go ahead and replace block 12 since that was thrown out in the test as well? Is block 1 and 2 doing that because 3 appeared to short at that moment? Also, #7 looks to be consistently the low block. Should I look at replacing that one too? Any feedback is appreciated.

    No insanity here you have bad battery's. very very common.

    Hundreds of battery rebuild posts on this site. Just start reading.

    Main reason G2's are sold or traded in on the spot are engine eats oil real bad and the hybrid battery is bad sometimes both battery's.
    off to auction it goes. Sometimes its both engine and battery.

    In your case the car sat dead for a while till it went to auction. The 12 volt battery is toast if you plan on keeping the car replace it.
    Pull the hybrid battery out see how rotten the interconnect is at 2005 it will be bad. Need new harness etc. Also check if the connector to the battery ecu is corroded and has gotten into the ecu itself that's pretty common.

    You must be diy if your buying auction cars.

    Pull out the hybrid battery open it up. It may have been whack a mole'd already. Start reading.

    Two kinds of gen 2 owners, those that have had a failed HV battery and those that are about too.

    Viable options: replace weak ones and wait for next failure (wak-a-mole), get 28 matched used modules from a newer gen 3 or 4 pack and install in gen 2 case, or get all new modules (newpriusbattery.com or toyota) and install into gen 2 case.

    Kay, I'll take a look at the battery. I've seen some stuff on the Prolong System. Do y'all think its worth it?

    As I understand it, the Prolong system is supposed to maintain batteries longer. I’m not sure how well it will work if your battery is already bad.

    It is, but from my data, i think i only have a few bad cells. after i replace em it should be good. the battery is pretty well balanced even as is

    Prolong really works best if the pack as a whole still has some life left to it.
    Once the pack has thrown a code it’s usually too late as you will need to physically remove that failed module or modules from the pack and repair or
    Replace them. You must replace the interconnect too as it will be pretty corroded.

    Prolong added 3 years to my pack I finally installed new modules from Newpriusbatterys. Recently and the car is running great again.

    I sold my Prolong for $400 and all 28 modules for $100.

    Been using the Prolong charger & discharger for over a year now and like edthefox5 said, its useful for keeping a good hybrid pack in fighting trim, but it ain't gonna fix a failed module. I use it to maintain a dozen or so Gen 2's belonging to friends and family, so it's been earning its keep, but if I was only working with one Gen 2 or 3 Prius I think I'd put that money toward a NexCell lithium upgrade, sell any still serviceable old modules, and call it a day.
