I put more oil in, even though checked the oil and it was adequate.

Also how much does it cost typically to get a passenger-side front wheel-bearing replaced?

Thanks. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

How many miles on this vehicle?

Have you ever run low on oil before?

Which metroplex in California are you nearest?

Sounds like exhaust related to me. Check your cat; may have been a botched attempt.

It sounded extremely loud as you got closer to the water pump and pulley

When you're doing the oil change, look underneath the pump, you might see further evidence in the form of colored sludge and/or dried crystals.

Well the yellow dipstick is right in front of you when you open the hood, pull it out and take a look. Takes 5 seconds. When was the last time you added oil or did an oil change?

I think a water pump bearing sounds reasonable as well, although I've never experienced it myself. That would be what I'd check.

In regards to a wheel bearing, I was quoted about $300/piece by a nearby reputable hybrid shop. That seems pretty high, but I think that was using OEM parts. Personally, I enjoyed doing it myself, and it cost a lot less. The worst part by far is getting the hub out of the knuckle, which takes a whole lot of pounding or a press.

OH NO...thats exactly what I was hoping wasn't the case. that a press wasn't needed. Looks like I'll have to take it to shop, otherwise I might have been able to do it myself. I used to have a Camry and had a wheel bearing replaced the mechanic was almost livid at me because of how difficult it was to get the hub out.

It's not strictly necessary, but at 210K, I would expect probably 15 to 30 minutes of hammering to get it out without a press, and you will destroy the old hub in the process. That's usually OK, but if you have to put it back together for any reason, it might be a problem. I still think it's worth DIYing, but it depends how much you value your time and effort.
