PO446 Code - What to fix first, when to toss car.

    I have a p0446 Code on my 08 Prius. It was due for inspection in August. The mechanic I took it to, said that if he tried diagnosing the issue, it would probably lead to several parts needing to be replaced, due to how rusty they are. (I think he just didn't want to deal with it.) The tank, and pipes leading to it are pretty rusty thanks to the NY salt.

    What I would like to know, is how hard is it to replace the whole system, (gas tank, Vacuum Switching Valve, etc) and at what point do I say enough and just try selling it? it has a lot of scrapes and bumps from the last owner, and only gets around 36-39 MPG on the highway. It also has a little over 160,000 miles, and is burning oil. I've quite a bit car work, but diagnosing a EVAP light is a new one. I did try putting a new gas cap on... That didn't do anything.
    Any advice would be great, I live in Syracuse, NY if anyone has recommendations for a mechanic.

    Thanks SFO. I'm not sure if I saw that post or not, but it was helpful. It and other posts mention the Techstream software to get a better idea of the codes a car is throwing. Do you think that's necessary? Is the P0446 a specific code? I just had Autozone read it for me, and the mechanic I took it to didn't give me anymore info.

    Not all OBD2 scanners are equal, many fail to read toyota hybrid specific DTCs, and you Might be missing some of the stored OBD2 codes.

    Techstream is the same diagnostic software that the dealer technicians use everyday, it doesn't get any better if you're serious about repair.

    The 'mini-vci' cable costs about $15, and techstream requires a windows device to run on, though you can also emulate if needed.
