I recently got my engine replaced on my 2007 Prius. Noticed that after startup, I hear a loud tack-tack-tack noise during initial acceleration.

Here's the video I took from under the engine -

The clatter is more pronounced at 16/17 seconds.

Once the car is running, I don't hear the noise as much, but it's there when the engine kicks on after being on battery. I should mention that the oil is full, and car runs fine once it's on the road/highway. It's just a very loud jarring noise.

    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Didn't listen, but how many claimed miles are on this USED engine?

Maybe a rod knock, only because the video was taken from underneath and not the top, where I would assume tappets or valves.

That's not good never heard that noise before on this site. That sucks as the engine is constantly starting and stopping.
Almost like the engine/trans connection is not right or a blown damper which is the spring loaded plate that dampens the load between the engine and trans.

Does it do it if you put a load on the engine like on a highway on ramp and you have to almost floor it? Or is it just the engine spool up spool down on start stop that you hear it.

But probably like SFO says blown engine. Rod knock. We see many engine failures on this site from lack of oil in the engine as the engine ages and poor maintenance it eats oil.

Yes, taking it back to the shop is my next step. They informed me that the engine has 28k on it.

I should add, that I'm pressing on the gas every time the engine revvs, so it's not on idle. Apologies for the confusion that may have caused.

Maybe a loose washer or nut is left behind in the oil pan?

Is it starting and stopping on its own, or are you making it start and stop? If you are making it start and stop, how are you achieving this?

I'm in the drivers seat, pressing the gas so the engine kicks on. I'm instigating the revs to highlight the clatter

Normally air getting in fuel injectors or leaking gas. Sounds just like metal in the cylinder. Replace black spacer and rubber mount

Thank you. I know it can be hard to predict this, but is it drivable at this time?

Thought you were in inspection mode not sure how you can say it’s near the trans

    Go on YouTube and search

    Prius inspection

It will show you the the chicken dance how to put it in that mode where the engine idles endlessly
Giving you the opportunity to check the engine

Jack up the front of car get under there and listen for it in the oil pan it probably has the bad throw rod.

Thank you. I'm happy(?) to say that the noise has gone away. I don't know what did it, but I didn't drive it for two weeks or so.

Are you in the habit of turning the car off while it is in the first 50 seconds of warm-up? That can make the next start-up clank and rattle until it get things back in order.

Not particularly, the only time I can think of is if I need to move the car off the driveway to let someone out or something. Do we think the noise was engine knock?
