I'd at least like them to stick to their quotes. Our Honda dealership was notorious for firm quotes, that suddenly doubled when the car was in. Not for unusual jobs either, just bread and butter work.

So it happened that the dealership sent me an online follow-up survey. I immediately let them know what I thought about their "service." Within 15 min of submitting the survey, the general manager told a guy from their shop to call me. Tried to justify the costs by saying that they are a union shop and the mechanics get $150 an hour and the PCV valve takes 2 hrs to change. Also said that the blank key fob costs them $330 and takes an hour to program. Offered me 25% off any work I wanted. What a joke.

I never write negative reviews, but I put two online yesterday and found a slew of negative reviews going back at least a year from people who had very similar experiences. One guy went from 5 star reviews of the place down to 1 star. One got scammed for $1K more work than was initially estimated. Another was told her car needed $3K worth of repairs. She got a 2nd opinion from an independent shop which found nothing wrong. She called corporate & managed to get an apology from the place, but was gullible enough to go back later for work and had them pull another scam on her.

These guys are above & beyond crooked. Who to call next? The Better Business Bureau? Local media?

$800 to replace a PCV on a Prius isn’t being well-compensates, it’s ripping somebody off.
$350 to refill the transaxle fluid on a Prius? Same thing.

No one is FORCING you to go to these places.
Not ALL dealers or repair shops are thieves.
You have to do your homework to find an honest place.

You could always open your own shop and charge $50 an hour labor rate and not rip people off. :)

Isn’t that what this thread is? Someone doing his or her homework to learn if a repair quote is fairly priced or not?

Actually: PCV valve replacement extreme cost
    Which $300 IS extreme!

My parents taught me to be honest.
I lost my job at a Mercedes dealership because I would not lie on the work order saying I replaced
parts I did not do and/or do a job I did not do.
The technician that taught me to alway ask: If the car you are working on was your mother, brother, sister,
wife, son, daughter, etc. car, what would you tell them?

It is very sad that most repair services, not just the car places, take advantage of people just to make a buck.

Less than a year after the Mercedes dealer fired me for not being a thief, fired the service and parts managers.
Less than 5 years later they were out of business.
We all reap what we sow!

Great info, thanks for sharing! I'm wondering about relocating the PCV valve, and am planning to in between the valve cover and inverter coolant tank region, when I install the OCC. I'm thinking I might even see what happens when I drill out the old PCV valve so to leave in place as a hose adapter. Thinking just cleaning will cause a being plugged risk... so unless I'm confident with what happens when I drill out like can clean out the internal check valve thing... probably safer not to and just invest in an adapter for the hose.

The pcv valve for the Pruis is $8-10. Easy to do when the intake manifold is off.
Worth replacing. Cleaning will help if the valve is okay.
I cleaned mine the first time I cleaned the EGR system. But I think it wasn't working correctly.
The next time I cleaned the system, with about 1/2 the mileage, the cooler was twice as clogged.
I had already bought one to replace and I think it's worth it. Certainly can't hurt! :)

Right on! Confirmed I paid $11.25 total including shipping and tax from the Elmhurst dealership on eBay. Kzoo was about $5 more and I didn't check the other dealers. Busy I guess now thinking, since I usually call around to a few to see.
