    3 years of free charging is great. The more competition for Tesla the better for EV future sales.

    VW looks to be more invested in fast charging growth than the last BEV infrastructure competitor, Nissan. Nissan is retiring their No Charge to Charge 2-year free charging program that we are on. That one unfortunately did not obtain escape velocity and CHAdeMO is now not long for the U.S..

    they're damned - whatever they do ...... Sales - but not enough sales ..... too many sales - infrastructure insufficient to match growth. It may be that VW follows the same growth. Even the same damnation from critics. For example VW future plans to go 100% Electric, while some manufactures simply look to use them as compliance vehicle's. Yes, their BEV goal was born out of fraud, but at least getting caught seemingly turn them around.

    From the article, "The delivery numbers top the previous record by 24%."

    Do you even read the articles you post? Ford is down 4.9%. The industry average is down 10%.

    Toyota and Tesla sales were both down around 28% earlier this year. Do you want to give odds on Toyota being up now?
    CHAdeMO was their own enemy in the beginning, with their licensing fees. Those discouraged others from using it.

    I see the marketing advantage of the free charging, and it will encourage people to try the network. That should get the company more on top of maintaining the chargers. It isn't the same draw as the free fuel incentives we've seen. I personally may never make use of it with home charging.

    There should be a range of EVs in price and performance. So I'm happy to see VW offer something other than a gutless compliance vehicle. Far from perfect, the ID.4 looks to be a reasonable option when it eventually arrives. Hopefully in another five years, they'll have something like my Std Rng Plus Model 3.

    For Tesla, lifetime free supercharging was a nice start to get the first customers to take the plunge. Even then it was only needed for road trips and the few Tesla owners who could not do home charging. But eventually many superchargers in metro areas got congested with the irresistible urge to use them for local free charging.

    As with Tesla, this is not necessarily an unsolvable problem as long as VW can transition away from their free fast charging incentive at the right time and keep up with network build out.

    Not enough range, and 60 mi/10 mins is not fast enough. Tesla Y is what 158 mi/15 mins sounds a lot better, extrapolating 90 mi/15 mins is still slow comparatively.

    (Boy we hated the one pedal driving in the Y on test drive. Glad it is programmable even though our sales associate said not)...

    ....snip... there's more to it than what meets the eye. Because the VW Porsche Audi strategy is to have much larger buffers at the bottom and top end of charge and discharge, it means that if you're down to the last % of charge on the Tesla, it will be a while before charging ramps up. It will also ramp down faster towards the top end. The downside being on the VW - you are lugging around a lot more battery for that benefit.

    Free charging, for life ... or just initially, does work well to get things up & running. Tesla's massive sales lead compared to other Electric vehicles shows that the substance of the vehicle has to be there also, once that incentive is pulled back. Chances are , this is what VW learned from Tesla's business model. You could only imagine how hideous Sales & Leases of hydrogen cars would be, if drivers had to Pony up $15/liter - just to drive around, only locally for the most part.

    This was in response to IPlug on what ICE is selling better than Tesla. I was pointing out that Ford is doing well all considered.

    Toyota sales have bounced back nicely in the 3rd quarter.

    It’s $13.50 KG not liters. If you don’t know that hydrogen is sold in KG than how can you even criticize a vehicle you don’t understand. BTW it only hold 4 KG, so not all that expensive for 300 miles.

    My son just started at CSULA. There's a hydrogen station on campus. We already checked out both the Mirai (a while ago) and more recently Nexo. Bummer I liked it but my wife didn't, also the whole school year is distance learning so MAYBE next year a Nexo lease may be a consideration. (The used Mirai's rear seats don't fold and he plays cello so kind of difficult to transport)...

    My Tesla charging curve:
    250_kW_charge.jpg
    This charging session ran longer than needed because I took a bathroom break and bought some nuts to gnash on. I only needed ~70 miles to reach the next Supercharger. Off hand, Tesla charging is left weighted at low SOC.

    Hydrogen can be measured by weight or volume;
    Capture+_2020-10-23-09-19-28.png

    Perhaps that's why the $13 figure you see at the dispenser - is $13 kg - (which you don't have to pay because Toyota needs to practically give their cars away in order to keep them on the road), as measurement litre gives just as acceptable measurement/amount - and thus $15/litre is more expensive per unit.

    But with so much cost per weight or volume diversion .... and switching the narrative to 'not understanding' is just to continue the duck & avoid issues theme.

    See? ... people notice when you try to duck and avoid a point by switching the narrative weight or price..... $13 or $15 or $12 or $16 kg vs L or whatever unit of measure you want to use, as it's still outrageous - compared to a BEV or a hybrid's efficiency. And that's why VW is going 100% to BEV.

    A question at the 2020 Q3 investor presentation carries a clue about how to shorten the EV charging time. When asked about charging time of the 4680, the answer was 'lithium plating limits the charging time.' So imagine you have a pack of 64 cells (P-parallel, S-series) :
    • P64S1- 3.7 VDC @100 A -> 3700 kW charging rate
    • P32S2 - 7.4 VDC @100 A -> 7400 kW charging rate
    • P16S4 - 14.8 VDC @100 A -> 14800 kW charging rate
    • P8S8 - 29.6 VDC @100 A -> 29600 kW charging rate
    • P4S16 - 59.2 VDC @100 A -> 58200 kW charging rate
    • P2S32 - 118.4 VDC @100 A -> 115400 kW charging rate
    • P1S64 - 236.8 VDC @100 A -> 230800 kW charging rate
    What this means is a switched cell, battery matrix can cut the charging time significantly. The charging station will need a battery buffer to handle the short, high demand load on the grid. But it also means charging times can be significantly reduced.

    Free Hydrogen for 3 years is awesome. No different than what Tesla did in the early years with free lifetime charging or VW offering free charging for 3 years. (Wonder what gave them that idea?) I will gladly pay more not to waste my time at a charger, my time is money.

    Europe just topped 500,000 units sold for EVs, and Tesla was not among the top, which tells you that there's competition now in this space,

    What are you confused about? Ford did better than all other ICE manufacturers in sales 3rd quarter. You asked and I answered. Tesla sales set a record but still did not meet expectations.
