Instrument panel not working

    Hi guys, hope you can help me.

    Recently purchased an '08 Prius, and everything has been pretty good on it until today.

    We only received one key with it (silver logo) and wanted to have at least one more just in case. Bought another key off ebay, and went through the first step in programming. It also had the silver logo, and the "B31EG" sticker. The new fob starts the car when inserted, so I know I did that step ok.

    The problem started when I tried to do the second step using the "chicken dance". I went through all the steps, and made it to step 9c, and of course it didn't work. What I didn't realize was that it had to be a brand new remote.

    Now, the main problem I am having, is that after going through all those steps, I realized that the speedo cluster no longer works. No speedo, or fuel gauge, or anything on that side lights up. Did I just royally screw things up?

    Btw, we just came back from a 60 mile trip, so I don't think the 12v battery has anything to do with it. It's been starting well, and everything has been working great.

    What is the voltage being measured at the jump points under the hood ?

    Might be time for a DIY speedometer fix using capacitors, or buy one with a lifetime warranty : Prius Speedometer Replacement

    It sounds like coincidence to me. Failure of the Combination Meter (CM, aka the speedo) is a fairly common problem on Gen2 Prius.Had to do mine last month. It's caused by a failing capacitor on the main CM circuit board. It acts up more in cold weather. See this thread combination meter repair - DIY | PriusChat. If you are good with a soldering iron you can repair this yourself or checking out SFO's link for repair if you remove the CM.

    So an update.

    I searched in the forum and found a thread about this problem, and how disconnecting the 12V battery might fix it.

    Sure enough, I did that, and the display came back. For how long, I don't know, but now I know how to fix the capacitor if I should need to.

    Did this hold for you? For anyone that might find this thread down the road, I also like Instrument Cluster Store for fair rates on solid repair work.

    It did not. I had to do the capacitor fix. Since replacing the capacitor, it has been working great. The only bad part was tearing apart the whole dash. But it was worth it, the capacitor cost me $0.70.

    I have a question for you if you can help. I have my gauge cluster out. It intermittently works.. the capacitor that goes bad is just fine.. what else could it be?
