Needing a taller tire

    I have a 2013 Prius persona with the 215/45r17 tires on it. Needing a taller tire to help absorb the rough roads. I have had 3 damaged tires now because of the roads and am currently sitting with another blowout in my driveway now. so with that, I am installing a 40mm lift kit and wanting to go with a taller tire. The thing is, I’m sitting with another blowout in my driveway, so going to a tire shop after the lift install and trying to get a taller tire is not an option. And I would like to get the largest tire possible and not just “wing it” and hope for the best. Anyone know how tall I can go with a 1.6” lift?

    Your first option should be to move to a smaller wheel which will allow you to run a tire with more sidewall. Certainly a 16" wheel would be a big improvement. A 15" would be even better, but I'm not sure if a 15" would clear the brakes on a Persona.

    I don't see how a lift kit helps your tire blow out issue. I'd switch to 195/65R15 tires, either on Prius alloy rims, or something like 15" Corolla steel rim (black), if looks are not important. Those are the stock 15" tires, roughly same OD but taller. My 2 cents: going to larger OD tire size is a can of worms.

    I think your theory is WAY off base here.
    Having a tire of similar construction but just a bit taller likely will NOT help your situation any.

    Sounds to me like you need tires with some extra plies in the tread.
    But the ride might be a bit more harsh.

    IF.....your present tires have "low profile" sidewalls, those tires are usually built for GRIP and not necessarily toughness.

    To get what you need, you may have to change wheels too.
    Why the lift ?? Are the roads really THAT bad ?
    Maybe you need to trade for a truck/SUV.

    As far as I know there's no difference in the brake components on models with 17" rims. Our 2010 Touring came with 17", and I switch to 15" Corolla rims (with snow tires) in winter, no problems.

    This is what I'm using:

    Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)
    steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized)

    Proven fact, more distance to travel before impacting the wheel, but thanks anyway. Kept the 17’s and went with a 215/55r17 and clearance is fine. No 40mm lift needed. Tested diagonally up a couple steep driveways with no rub issues .

    Did you notice any rubbing on speed humps or high speed turns ?

    this is incorrect. I forget if it booster or actuator, but one or both are different.
    Found this out when a buddy Prius came stock with 17", replaced part used from a car that came with 15" and his car wasn't good until he put in one from a 17" car

    I meant just the brake calipers, for wheel clearance issues. AFAIK there’s no diff there.

    17x7.5 +40 wheel
    225/55/17 wildpeak trail tire

    will these fit on a gen 3 without a lift?

    Seems like you might get rubs in turns and especially if you hit a bump while turning,

    there are old threads on this topic with the side effects of that tire
