    Hi guys,

I just had my second rock chip and crack. Today's was about 2 feet long and fairly deep. Previously I had it replaced with oem glass by the dealer with camera calibration. Now this has happened I was wondering if you guys know if the non oem windshields are stronger? Does it have the same cabin sound dampening and does it bode well with our lane departure camera system. Just wondering about these things now it has happened twice now.

The chips and cracks have little to do with the quality of the windshield if at all. You have roads with stones where you live, and you will get chips and cracks until these stones are cleared.

That said, Toyota OEM windshields made in Japan are of top quality.

We just had our windshield replaced. The insurance company had a windshield repair place they use and they had to order it from the dealer. The camera calibration was all included. Took them about an hour to due. Since the windshield came from the dealer, assuming it was a direct Toyota factory replacement, but didn't ask!

Did they do the calibration at that repair shop or did you have to go to Toyota dealer?

Anyone have non OEM windshield? Any difference in strength or cabin noise?

This has been discussed at length on the Gen 4 (Non-Prime) forum. The consensus is the aftermarket windshield is not any stronger or chip resistant than OEM. We had ours replaced with FUYAO glass at an independent glass shop. We did not use insurance. We also didn't have the camera recalibrated and it was, in fact, off a little, so we just turned off the lane departure warning. Wife never liked it anyway. Don't miss it.

The made-in-Japan OEM costs about twice as much as the aftermarket windshield, but if your insurance covers it, it's no-brainer to go with the OEM. The OEM windshield is at the very top in quality.

With regards to Non-OEM vs OEM glass strength I'm not sure. But when I found our '04 Sienna's windshield cracked the difference in price was almost an extra digit, $$$$ vs $$$, alright maybe $700 to $800...

You can check the price of the OEM windshield at:

Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store

The OEM windshield is about $600. You can always negotiate with the dealer for a better price and likely have it reduced to $500 or less.

You can get an aftermarket windshield for about $300.

Glad to see the Prius glass is cheaper than the Sienna. I just peeked at parts.toyota.com as suggested MSRP for the Sienna is $1052.23 discounted at $759.11 through Puente Hills Toyota. Astronomical....

Are there any modifications that can bolster the windshield? Once this second windshield is replaced just wanted to see I can do anything different this time

Your problem is the stones on the road, not the windshield. If you drive on a road covered with nails or screws, you will get flat tires. If you drive on a road covered with stones, you will get a broken windshield. The modification needed is for you to take alternate routes and avoid the stony road that you have been driving on.

And go with the OEM windshield, not an aftermarket one. It's not worth saving a few hundred dollars to stray away from the OEM windshield.

This is anecdotal, but I hate the Fuyao windshield that was installed on my 4Runner. When I bought it, it had a Pilkington windshield that was installed improperly, so it leaked and the weather stripping whistled in the wind. The windshield appeared to be quite old because it was badly pitted. I kept waiting for it to break, but eventually (after 4 years) I got fed up with it and had it replaced. They put in a Fuyao, and it got a rock chip literally a month later. I had it repaired, but it was on the edge so it didn't really work. Now I have a crack all the way across the windshield and need to get it replaced again. Maybe it was just bad luck, but I don't usually get big rock chips because I tend to leave a safe following distance. I'd rather have the Pilkington that's maybe too soft and slowly deteriorates than the Fuyao that's maybe too brittle and cracks the first time it hits a rock. Ideally OEM would be the perfect balance.

I have about 24,000 miles on my Prime, and the windshield is still in great condition.

To be honest once I found out the OE price I started researching lexan aka bullet proof glass. I'm afraid I didn't get very far....

Even thought this is about the newest Prius, I had a 2005 Prius with a cracked OEM windshield that I got replaced with a aftermarket one for free (covered under insurance here in Florida). I haven't seen a difference and haven't had any problems. Does sound like it's a road problem, not a windshield problem. There are so many semi trucks down here on the interstates. If I drove on the interstates every day, most likely, I would get a chip or crack in my windshield pretty soon.

Recently I got the windshield replaced (2nd time now in the past 1.5 yrs). Today I got a small chip again.

I've been driving with alot of space between the other cars. I also started taking a non hwy route for one of my commutes. Today I commuted to my other workplace on the route that I've never had a single rock chip for many years.

For 9 years prior to my prime, I had the genesis coupe and I've only had one small chip (never had to get windshield replaced)but all the other times the rock just bounced off without any blemishes.

Is there really nothing that can be added like a coating or an entirely different windshield that I can look into? I was reading about some ceramic coating that mitigates rock chips but I'm not sure if its just a gimmick. I hope never but if I have to get another windshield replacement I'm thinking about getting a different car. It must be because of the thinner construction of the glass and the angulation.
