Prius started making an electronic type winding or revving motor sort of noise from the front. Happens in park as soon as it turns on, intensifies with brake, but then goes off. Comes back on near stops, but also sometimes on the road. Check engine light came on then went off, same with maintenance light. Any ideas? Thanks

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Would you happen to have any OBD2 codes (DTCs) that you could share with us?

When was the last time you check the engine oil?

You're moderated until you reach five (5) posts. I didn't watch the video.

I experienced the same sound- turned out to be the abs actuator. If you go to the dealer, they'll charge you an arm and a leg. I did it at my independent hybrid mechanic, fortunately he didn't charge me an arm and a leg.

    Thank you both.
@SFO: No codes yet, don't have the gizmo. I had the oil changed about 400mi ago, so it's pretty fresh.
@traav1s: Darn. That makes sense. I have a local independent I sort of trust. I'll run it by them.

Engine light on then off is usually low engine oil. Yes I know you just got it changed go check its level.

Whatever it is never heard it before sounds like metal grinding on metal. No mileage listed so don't know how hard the car is driven.

Open the hood and look and listen.

@traav1s You were right, it was the ABS actuator. Still working, but loud, could give out. Apparently not a safety issue as I would've thought. But between the time I noticed that noise and the time I took it to the shop, someone stole the catalytic converter.

That's unfortunate. People keep stealing the cat's off the gen 2 priuses, and we're all at risk.
