    @vvillovv @jzchen

I went and purchased 2 days of the Toyota tech service just now. My manual is the same as the one they have posted.

the gasket itself has no sealent on it. But I do see a small smear of Possible residue in the 2 corners. (As shown in the pics). And as possibly shown in the manual as well.

like I said before. I think just a lil dab in each corner. Where timing cover side is. too help ensure no oil gets in cylinders.

and the rest is sealed by the headgasket itself.

I’ll post another reply in a minute. With pics of both sides of headgasket.

Attached is 2 photos of headgasket. (One of each side).

and a pic of the cylinder block with 2 corners. Where I believe a small dab of sealent will go.
And where possibly leftover residue is at.

I agree. That's what I'd do, if I ever decide to try. Not feeling too confident sitting waiting for the steering rack to arrive, (to replace the one I accidentally bent).

Both on top of the cylinder block, and then on top of the gasket in the same spot, personally.

Glad you got a subscription. Job like this nobody wants to revisit anytime soon. Verify everything is up to date. I have mine from around 2015 but when I subscribed recently the documents show latest update in 2019. I didn't notice a difference in the actual instructions so far but comforting to know I'm up to date, at least for the job at hand. The blue hyperlinks work and so can clarify any further details...

Techstream gives access to other resources besides the manual. I don't know where to direct you for more info on the head gasket but you should take a look and see if you can find something to help
I've read here that there is a section that looks like it's the owners manual put it's actually a more technical thing. I thought it was the owners manual. I spent most of all of my two day sub leaning how to use it and printing everything I could send to my printer.

In the third pic - is that a little indent in the block - right in the center of the curved section? Is there one like it on the other end of the block? That is the spot that looks to me like what shows in the illustrations. Does the head have the same tiny indent thing that matches that location on both ends too?
Or is that just a shadow in the pic?

The techs here that have techstream subs are probably enjoying thanksgiving with their families and trying to forget about work for a few hours.
Maybe one of two of them might see this thread tomorrow or the next day.

PDF Creator used to create file names with the document titles. Didn’t figure out why it wasn’t last time I had a subscription. But if you set it not to overwrite files at least you can sort it out later.

The $55 Techstream allows you to download the Techstream software and with a dongle pull codes, etc, for the duration of the subscription....

The “indentation”. I believe is just left over imprint from the headgasket itself, it has no actual depth too it.

I don’t think any sealant would go in the middle there, It would squeeze out and go down into the cooling jacket and piston.

Triangle light. Means the Prius battery is done.

you should still be able to drive it with just the normal gas motor itself. However it will be much weaker.

should hook up a scanner. And see why the brake light is on.

After checking with 3 browsers I only see 6 black rectangles in the OP.
After zooming way way in using Chome browser I now believe that the corners pointed at here
Gen 3 Prius. 2012. Help reading service manual | PriusChat
are the right places to put the sealant. Just to tack it down in place.
But, those graphs are not easy to follow and I get why you're asking first. I would too.

With Gen3 being known for clogged EGR leading to head gasket issues (like I keep seeing posted here at PC) I'm surprised I can't find much more info besides what's on youtube and non of those I've seen mentions anything about sealent.

One tries to explain why and might make sense to there being more gasket material on the block (does it look the same on the head too?)
than there is in the corners where the sealant might have been.

The channel has more prius head gasket video and one is a 2012 start to finish.

In the latest gasket masters Prius head gasket replacement video (in a cab company parking lot) they recommend another sealant; I believe it has a much longer cure time. There's a caution to not start up the car for 24 hour.

Latest interpretation (at least after approximately 30 mins of me deciphering) is that the sealant goes on two tiny spots, then gasket then another two tiny spots, then head. Torque down within 15 mins, I'd have those bolts sitting in a bowl with oil so pre-lubed for me...

But I have some suspension fish to fry. Not looking forward to tomorrow when the rack arrives. (But thankfully no engine issues here. Who knows maybe the 91 we religiously use has just enough anti-knock to keep the doctor away)....

The grey Permatex “one minute” that I applied to mine said not to add fluids or start the car for at least 15 minutes, preferred one hour for full cure. No problem, I still had to reinstall the engine when I did mine. LoL
