Team, just bought a 2021 prime limited today. Dealership has to go and get it Monday.. moving up from a 2016 Prius 4

what radio/cellphone does the sos use in the model? I got a heads up from Toyota that sos in the 2016 will loose that function in 2024 as 3G will be discontinued in the US

    I hope it is a 4G? 5G would be a long shot?

4G most likely. I have a 2018 and have received no such notification.

The FCC IDs for the data communication module used by the Safety Connect system are on page 81 of the Owner’s Manual (PDF). The JOYJ79 is an LTE-compatible module, described in my 2017 posting.

    Which is a 4G variant.

LTE by Verizon as I understand it. In the LE model, Verizon LTE also serves the WiFi Connect. WiFi Connect is not available for XLE or Limited at least on the 2020 model. I don't think this has changed in the 2021 model.

I hadn't been watching this, but now see that Verizon will be shutting down 3G at the end of next month. T-Mobile, January. AT&T, February 2022.

If those are correct, then the heads-up you got is either wrong and too far out, or it was for 4G instead of 3G.

I wonder what this means for rural and fringe areas that don't even have 4G yet?

When I call in to get the system initialized I will pose the question to the operator on the other end. Before I give them my credit card number to initialize it.

Confirmed it is using 4G/LTE for the cell radio.
