My company just gave me a car.
I LOVE my Prius, but I can't afford to keep making payments for a car that I'm not using.
Besides, this car should be driven...........not sitting in my driveway!

ok, that makes sense. at 12,600 miles, its obvious you are not using it. too bad you werent closer. i know of a few people looking for a decent deal.

one guy was offered a 2004 with 30,000 miles on it, pkg 3 i think for $24,500. a bit too steep imo for a car that was just under $23,000 new

 I just did a sort of "survey" of used Prius for sale by dealers in the continuous 48. Actually, I have ordered a 2007 trading my 2004 and was curious whether my trade offer was reasonable - it is.

My so-called "survey" was done on www.toyota.com "Build and Price your Toyota" by looking for used Prius with "unlimited" geography. This produced ~550 used Prius offered around the U.S. by dealers. The variety of prices was astounding. The consistently highest asking prices were CA, WA and OR. The listing, however, did not detail which "packages" were included on each Prius offered.

Looks like my low-miles (22,000) 2004 Package 8 (Like Package 5 on the 2007's) would retail for ~$23,000 to $23,500 in North Texas.

My "survey" indicates that North Carolina is an area that produces low to average resale numbers.

    Thanks for the info!
My experience would say your survey is correct. I have turned down some ridiculously low offers from dealers. I'm not looking to get rich, but I do want what the car is reasonably worth.
Maybe I should try to sell it somewhere else.
In your expert opinion, which 'nearby' state is my best option?

    :) Howdy, splee

I wouldn't say my opinion is 'expert.' I went to "unlimited" as the query "radius" which gave me the entire 48 contiuous states. You might try logging on to www.Toyota.com. Click "Locate Dealers" Advanced Search - Enter only your State (center right) - "Go" - Certified Used Vehicles - Your ZIP - Radius (Select what you want, say 100 miles) - "Prius" - Click "Search TCUV Vehicles Now" Alternatively, you could enter a nearby state or increase the radius.

This will produce a list of Dealer Used Prius within the radius you have specified from which you can get clues to the "retail" resale values. As I mentioned before, these listings do not produce detailed information regarding Packages and Options.

You might also Google "Kelley Blue Book" and enter the information regarding your Prius. Kelley tends to be a little higher than you can realisticly expect, especially from a Dealer. You can also Google "Black Book" (Dealers like Black Book since it tends to be low) and "NADA" which usually produces about the same numbers as Black Book.

My negotiating with several area Dealers resulted in about 85% to 90% of the "Dealer retail" in trade based on the results from my "surveys" above. I did bargain hard, pitting the Dealers against each other. In my "work pad" I made sure the other Dealers' business cards were visible. I also note that my 2004 was Package 8 with added Options which may not have been reflected in my 'survey' - so the pristine condition of my Prius plus the added goodies had some effect.
