Toyota and Honda lead fuel-efficient cars

    "WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hybrid and economy-class vehicles built by Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. dominate the government's annual top-10 fuel economy list for 2007 vehicles.

    The hybrid-electric Toyota Prius led the way with 60 miles per gallon in the city and 51 mpg on the highway, while the Honda Civic Hybrid was second with 49 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy said Tuesday.

    Honda and Toyota made seven of the 12 vehicles listed in the top 10. The new Toyota Camry Hybrid made its debut at No. 3..."

    But what the heck is up with "seven of the 12 vehicles listed in the top 10"? Is this part of the new math, or going overboard with being politically correct, and there are no losers?

    Did anyone notice that GM who says they have 8 out of 10 cars that get 30MPG or more did not make the list for cars?

    Yes, this is news, although it's not very surprising news.

    As for having 12 in the top 10... I noticed the Escape & Mariner hybrids tied for 10th place, which at least makes it 11 in the top 10. There must be another tie somewhere in there to make it 12, though that still would make it the "top 12" and not "top 10." They should have re-worded that. They also should have included the "top 10" info in a list, so readers would know what placed where. They only mention what placed first, second, third, fourth, tenth, and tenth.

    The Yaris took two spots (5th and 6th) because they counted the manual and automatic transmission seperately.

    A Hyundai and Kia tied for 9th. And the Ford Escape 4WD and Mercury Mariner 4WD (really the same car) tied for 10th.

    that is amazing that a mid-large passenger car with 6 cylinders ?? that is rated 3rd among all cars. that just blows me away

    It's only right to mention that the Prius inherited the number one spot from the Honda Insight. Sure, some would argue that it's a niche car, but a well-driven Insight could kick a well-driven Prius' butt any day.

    well there is a reason why it is not on the list. there really was NO NICHE for the car.
