CD player?

My spouse gets those too, for our longer travels (pre-pandemic). When we haven't finished certain CD audiobooks before their library due date, I've had no difficulty transferring their contents to a USB flash drive. Better than CD, because it eliminates the continual disc changing.

I did the same for a friend when her machine wasn't up to the task. Though some people might tend to be quite choosy about which friend they ask to transfer sex advice books to other media.

 

Is there a USB stick maximum size (Gb) limit on the Prius ?

 

The size limitation is due to the FAT32 file formatting. The Windows FAT32 is limited to 32GB. You can use any size USB flash drive, but anything larger than 32GB usually comes formatted in exFAT system. Toyota's HU can not read exFAT or NTFS formatted USB, I don't think. That being said, you can always use a third-party app to format larger than 32GB USB drive with FAT32 tool without losing the capasity. I have used a 128 USB flash drive formatted with FAT32 on my PRIME no problem. But if you put too many files on it, it will take forever to index. For that reason, I use multiple 32GB or less flash drives and USB switch hub to switch the different flash drives on the fly.

This is the Jinhoo CD Player I have. The rechargeable battery runs for about 5 hours and the audio cable plugs into the "aux" jack on the Prius console. It is currently out of stock at Amazon.

My 2019 came with a CD player stock.

Toyota is old-tech.

 

As of the 2020 models, Toyota no longer put CD players in most of their cars. I was dismayed and resorted to the awkward use of a portable CD player to play my books on disc when on trips. Getting Android play in my new 2020 AWD-e required a $1800 replacement of the stereo (still no CD player) which aggravated me and almost made me walk away from getting my Prius (I don't do Apple). Toyota marketing needs to ask its customers before making these decisions.

I will, at some point opt for a third party head unit to solve these problems as I had to when the CD player in my 2004 failed (most of them failed due to quality issues).

As I commented on #6, the 2021 Prius Prime LE model still comes with a CD player. And PP LE also supports Android Auto. Higher two models XLE and Ltd do nither. I did not use the CD player that came with my 2020 PP, and I don't think I will miss it if it is gone, but for AA connectivity, 2021 PP LE may be a good enough reason to pick it as my next car.

Since I don't have PP or regular Prius right now, I can't test this, but would a USB CD player that is used for a laptop connect and play music via onboard USB port? A MP player like iPod worked fine via onboard USB port, so I thought it may work. Anyone tried this?

 

Seriously, i recommend buying the oldest iPhone model that supports CarPlay, off ebay, and loading it up with music ripped off CDs rather than getting an external cd player. The CarPlay interface is so nice for playing music.

Honestly, the cd-player slot in my 2019 serves as a pretty good cell-phone holder mount. It's high enough to make the cell-phone usable (maps, pandora, podcasts) without it being too dangerous (i.e. having to take my eyes too far off of the road).

 

I just transferred yet another audio book from CD (via a home desktop) to USB thumb drive, the third audio book so transferred since this thread was started.

Now we just need a travel re-opening so that we can hit the road again. July? September?

Just had family fly down from up North last week - they said the planes and airports were busy.

 

There is no "aux" jack on my 2021 Prius. I have just purchased a HOTCD 611 portable player and a Car and Driver Bluetooth Power Station and FM Transmitter and Charger which is what I was told would work. However, I can't get any sound. There is no where in the Prius or on the Car/Driver accessory to plug in the sound cable from the CD player. Any ideas?

 

Does that mean the apparent hole circled here in red is not an AUX jack?



If not, and the CD player doesn't seem to put out audio on a USB port, them I'm not seeing how this will work. The product descriptions aren't exactly clear, possibly a bit misleading.

 

Alas that little apparent hole is not one. Just an emblem. I have bought a adapter so I can plug the audio into the other USB port on the Car and Driver transmitter, but although now my phone will connect the cd player to Bluetooth the car audio system now fails a making the pairing although it recognizes the CD player. I can't figure. I'm going to try again today. And I've asked my rural neighborhood group if any of them have younger children and grandchildren around over the holidays that may be more savvy than me who might be willing to take a look. I am beginning to see that this may not work and that I may have to take the car to an car audio specialist and see if the have ideas. Toyota has no interest in helping. Oh for the Toyota of yesteryear!
