I'm coming to the end of a head gasket replacement on my daughters 2012 Prius. My last task this evening was placing the timing chain tensioner. Before I go any further I have a couple questions...

1.) Is it possible to place the tensioner in the wrong way? If so, which way is correct?

2.) Also, is there a trick to getting the tensioner to release or will it release automatically?

Any help or insight is appreciated.

I took off the valve cover and looked down the chain. Holding a screwdriver against the chain, it appears the tensioner released and tightened the chain.

    Good Luck!
