I bought a used 2006 Prius in pretty decent shape and have had it for a few weeks now with no problems until the buttons on the fob stopped working so I changed the battery, Little did I know the fob forgot its secret signature code so now the buttons work but in order to start the car I have to hold the fob right next to the start button as if the battery was dead but its not, its a brand new energizer lithium that reads 3.0v. From a quick search I found other people using their back up key to go through the program mode and re programming the key but I was only given the one key. I would like to think if it still starts it next to the start button then surely there is still some sort of memory there right? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do short of paying the steelership $110 to program it for me? Thanks

    Welcome to PriusChat!

Have you checked the SKS switch under the steering wheel?

Yes, Ive tried it both in and out. However I got off the phone with the dealer today to verify the price of the re-code and they told me if the key is working next to the start button then it doesnt need re-coded... So I got to pondering. What I failed to mention was that when I replaced the battery I also replaced the shell. Is it possible the aftermarket shell is too thick? So I tried it in multiple positions in the slot and finally got it to work upside down and not in all the way. I had to hold it in place or else the spring would have pushed it out and the car finally registered the key being there. So I guess not all shells are made equal?

Don't know about shell compatibility, but I hope you also swapped the separate RFID chip over, or at least saved the old shell.

Okay, come to think of it. I didnt know what that little guy was. The old shell was in really bad shape so I assumed it was something busted. All I transferred over was the little board. Guess im going to search my garage trash can for the image I just found on google.... bahh

Well that did it. Funny how it would still start without it though. Thats a big relief! Thanks a bunch man. Since we're on the subject of this bad boy. When its cold or at least it seems like thats when it does it. When I press start I hear a loud vibrating noise coming from the dash that sounds like a cellphone going off for about 20 seconds. When I searched about the noise someone else wondered about a noise like this and someone suggested the brake system pumping up but I can hear that also and its more mild unless its the same noise and its more aggressive when its cold?
