Can someone explain how to "force charge" the drive battery in a 2010 Prius?
    Thanks

It is not clear why you would want to, but put your car in P and rev up the engine.
The power has no where to go but the battery.

    Thank you jimboPalmer,

I have concerns about long term storage and if after several months when the vehicle is started and the drive battery has shown a degree of discharge, I would like to be able to charge it relatively quickly because it will not be possible to drive it due to lack of vehicle liability insurance. Could charging in this manner cause problems?

    No.

There is less issue with the High Voltage battery than the 12 battery, but a Force charge will not hurt.

(get a battery maintainer for the 12 volt)

    Thanks,
This will be about a 20 month storage (Covid). The 12-volt battery has been disconnected from the vehicle and will be periodically charged.

Some models will not rev the engine in P when you push the accelerator.

And I'm pretty sure that the recommended storage state of charge is somewhere in the middle.

And......just out of curiosity, exactly what is it that is related to the Covid problem that will last 20 months ??

I don't understand why the recommended battery level before storage should be mid way on the scale.

"And......just out of curiosity, exactly what is it that is related to the Covid problem that will last 20 months ??"

The Covid problems will keep the vehicle owners at their northern home NH through the winter and they don't intend go to their southern home FL until January of 2022.

Some excerpts from Wikipedia Lithium-ion battery - Wikipedia

Periodic topping charge about once per 500 hours. Top charging is recommended to be initiated when voltage goes below 4.05 V/cell.

Charging Li-ion batteries beyond 80% can drastically accelerate battery degradation.

AFAIK, the 2010 didn't have an option for Lithium-ion, only nickel metal hydride.

You can have it in park and very gently have your foot on the gas to keep the engine on.

Thanks to Dr. Prius @ priusapp.com
My 2010 has a Lithium hybrid pack.

What I don't understand is the need some people seem to have to "understand" everything.
Do you understand battery chemistry in general ?
If you wish to get a better understanding, Google the subject and do some personal research.
It is also possible that my recollection is wrong.

Then some math. From now until January of 2022 seems to me like 13 months, not 20.

That’s like the deep state information being revealed to the mass, but Biden said only for 100 days.

That looks like fake news to me.
Just EXACTLY what was his reference to 100 days ?
It certainly was NOT that the problem would be over in 100 days.

I see that this thread might have bottomed out. I thank those who took my questions seriously and provided helpful information. As far as counting months, spade, you don't have all of the information about storage time...just faulty assumptions.

    I am assuming NOTHING.
I am only going on what you SAID.....which is apparently incomplete.

With the vehicle powered up, I pressed the park button. Then I applied a bit of throttle and the engine started and ran. But there was no indication that any charging of the drive battery was taking place. The battery was bout 3/4 charged. Was I doing something wrong?

On park, set parking brake all the way down. Push and hold brake pedal down all the way, don’t release it. Put car in drive and gently press accelerator down. Most important part is to continue to hold down the brake pedal during the entire process.

Pushing down accelerator to charge on park o_O

Really? The first 100 days has been the standard benchmarks of an incoming President since 1933 and FDR.
Now can we please get away from conspiracy theories, fake news, politics and just focus on Prius?
