2013 Prius V 5

    Hello, this is the first time I’ve ever used Reddit so idk how it really works . But I got my first car about a month ago and I really wanted a Prius not just because of the gas mileage but I think they are fun spunky cars. I got a 2013 Prius V 5 and I absolutely love it!! Before that I would drive my sisters 2011 Honda C-RV i attend college in downtown Atlanta so I didn’t need a car but now that I’m moving off campus a little ways off I needed to have one and I like my Prius a hell of a lot better. But I was wondering how many MPG you should get on average right now I’m at about 37.7 MPG living mostly on back roads out in the boondocks but will this go up once I get back to the city?

    congrats and welcome!

    this isn't reddit, but no prolemo. your mpg is maybe just a touch below average, but it depends on many factors.
    how many miles on her? what brand and model tires? what pressures?

    hvac use impacts mpg's, even the 12v battery to some extent.

    do you know the maintenance history?

    how fast are you driving? v won't do much better in the city, but suburban might help.

    go to fuely.com, and you can find the real world average for your vehicle.

    I have the same car. Reset the history on MPG and drive it differently than you would a gas car. Coast/Glide more and watch Red section on gauge (left dash) when using pedal. I’m at 45 and can get as high as 70.

    If you are talking about tank to tank mpg, it can vary quite a bit especially if you are driving aggressively. You get an average mpg for trip A, trip B and lifetime Odo. The trip avg mpgs are resettable and will automatically clear if the 12v battery has been disconnected.

    Miles on your car is important information as it provides a clue on the engine condition. My lifetime mpg at 245,000 miles is right at 42 mpg as calculated by the trip computer. You can get that with average driving up to about 60 mph. Its better in the city. Anticipating slowdowns and stops will improve mileage by increasing engine off time and enhancing regeneration of power into the battery. As will light acceleration whenever possible.

    However mpg will drop fast at 65-85mph, our range of freeway speed limits. At those speeds everything is working against you, from aerodynamics to low battery assistance.

    With that said, this generation of Prius is prone to clogged and carboned up cylinders and intake air passages which can force rich fuel trim operation. A weak high voltage battery will reduce mpg as well. Watch your oil consumption on high mileage versions.
