Nope. They have way more arms than I. But I have better aim, and I use silver bullets. Besides, Tom's going hungry tonight, which is punishment enough. :)

Actually, the computer resets the average MPG automatically after each fill up. I should say each time you put in more than 3 gallons of gas and drive.

Me too, now that you mention it. We just wish our other halves would put their minds to it. That, and the consumption screen.

MR SMG here again. Sorry to set off that hail of male vs female thing. It was more of a joke. That is what I do. Anyway, our computer does not reset the MPG when we refill, just the miles per tank. I am not sure if that is a new thing, but once we hit the reset button on the consumption screen, we see it moving a lot more on a short trip. Before it would sit there for miles and miles before it changed.
I got it back up to 41 before I was done with it last night. I was going to drive around the neighborhood on electric just to get it up higher, but that isn't the point....

OH YEAH!! Now you're talking! A real Prius owner, so I'm told...I was taking extra trips to the mall to pump up the mpg...got to 45 mpg...now I'm at about 41 mpg and still on my second tank, due for a fill-up soon...have about 300 miles...but don't want to get too low...

OH really?! Is this a new thing for the 2006? Try this... fill up more than 3 gallons, drive around the block and see if your average MPG resets. The average does not reset immediately after you put in gas, it resets after you put in more than 3 gal. and make a turn, I believe. At least thats what I experienced with my 05.

will do! We are do for a fill up in about another week. We are head to ATL on Labor day weekend so I will check it then to. But on our past vaca I did not see it move that much, just the miles per tank. Not the MPG.

The '06 does not reset the FE automatically after a fill up.

Seems like I'm not the only problem. My 06 is just starting to break in hgeading towards 5K miles. Inotce that when only I drive it I can easily clear 50+ MPG, my last tank was almost 54. That was with just me driving. So far the average has been 47 or so from 0 miles.

However I just noticed the culprit is my girlfriend driving. On the last tank she basically drove 90% of the time and it ended up a whopping 40MPG.

I will have to see if I can get rid of some lead in her shoes or something as I'm not exactkly a slow driver and normally do 75MPH or so on the freeways. She seems to be going faster and also don't believe in trying to conserve momentum.

Insist that the only fair test is if both vehicles have 5 equally weighted people in it.

I also feel that my wife (whose driving I deem eratic) hurts the mileage.

My wife and I have a friendly banter with regards to MPG. Based on current averages on similar commutes, it is true that I average about 3 MPG more than her. (Not starting a male vs. female thing here; just pointing out a fact that is necessary background for the rest of this post.)

When occasion comes for one of us to drive the other's car, which has only to do with who is transporting the baby, we always remind each other: "Don't kill my mileage."

Normally, my car is returned with approximately the same, or in some cases a few tenths lower, on the overall MPG. I typically return her car with the same MPG, or a couple tenths higher. The former results in much chastizing (in fun) while the latter results in much boasting (also in fun).

But, beware the situation where she raises my mileage, or I lower hers. I hear about it for hours. :)

When it all comes down to it, my wife's got the hang of driving for pretty good mileage, as do I.

After 33 years I keep a low profile. Keeping it under the radar is where it needs to be. My wife does not drive my Prius because "it is different". She can be a bit a a technofobe when she wants to be. Her choice. She can find things on the internet faster than I can, despite the fact she has been using it for years less than I have. She nags me when I am driving about how slow I am going. I point to the speedometer and suggest that I am driving the speed limit (or 1-2 over), her answer is " you drove faster before". I guess I did, but I am having fun with the MPG thing for now and am staying out of trouble. My advice is only fight battles you absolutely, positively, know you have won before you start, or wait until she looses interest and do as you like, but do it very carefully or you will hear about it for the next 20 years. Question why can't women forget?

Yes indeed, pick your battles and keep a low profile. Very some solid advice, even for someone married only 8 years.

I have also since learned that certain, shall we say periodic feminine "power surges" dictate AC use, and hence spousal gas mileage dips.

Mrs. Pale Alien continues to use the AC set between Frozen Fjord and Frozen Tundra. I now shut my mouth and pulse and glide on my time.

Why can't women forget? Good question. I think selective memory is both the blessing acurse of the male mind. Women are wired very differently...
