2008 dashboard buzz/p1116

    Hey Prius Peeps, picked up a honey of an ‘08 with 134k.

    Have not sold my old 2005 yet so the ‘08 sat for a while before I got the ‘08 registered and swapped a few interior parts.

    There is an audible buzz coming from the center of the dashboard when parked. It will eventually drive me bananas. The ‘05 never had this noise.

    Also, P1116 popped up and I read up about it, how to monitor it, etc. Question there is that an overheat issue? Is the sensor commonly faulty? Where’s it located and how hard to replace?

    P1116 is a coolant valve sticking. I had that once when my dealer underfilled my coolant. The coolant acts as a lubricant for the valve and sometimes just filling the coolant to full will free the valve up. At least it did for me on my 2004 Prius.

    It seemed to happen right after I added some coolant. So maybe I didn’t put the cap on right. And I just did the three way valve and I know what that sounds like when it fails.

    You're talking about adding some coolant to the engine coolant loop, right? If the radiator cap wasn't on tight you'd know all about it. If you just changed the 3-way coolant control valve, you might need to revisit bleeding air out of the system, including some 20 -sec bursts of running the CHS (coolant heat recovery) system pump two or three times.

    If you added some coolant to the inverter coolant loop it has no connection to your issues.

    Hope your using the cap on top of the rad.

    Go on YouTube lookup

    Prius inspection

    it will show the chicken dance to put it in endless idle

    fill the rad up to the top take the CSP off put it in inspection mode and let it run when it reaches op temp put the heat on full heat then watch the rad fluid level continue to top it off as it gets lower snd listen for noises under the dash as 5he coolant flows through the heat exchanger. Gurgling under the dash means you have
    A bad airlock which will require intermittent running of the CHRS tank pump by jumping out the Chrs relay.

    hooe you own a scan gauge or tech stream so you can monitor engine temp.

    It’s not smart changing that valve without being able to monitor the engine temp as you may be in overheat and you will never know till you see the temp alarm on the dash sometimes to late head damage we see this on here.

    Thanks guys. Yea I did most of that.

    Anybody got any insight to that buzzing noise? It’s coming from the center of the dash, when I’m in the car but am certain it’s coming from the engine bay

    When does it occur? If it happens when you step on the brake, bleed the brakes (look up the "chirp" - bubbles in the ABS manifold).

    The buzzing occurs when I start the car, then stays on after the engine starts and stops. It then stays on after I drive and for about 40 seconds after I shut off the car/power.

    I would check for a leak in the brake accumulator (a pressure storage tank). The buzz sounds like the brake accumulator pump that normally runs periodically to keep the accumulator pressurized.
