I replaced the wiper blades on my 2010 Prius with Goodyear blades from Costco, but the blades are not making good contact in the middle of the blades. I've since heard that I should have taken the metal inserts out of the original blades and put them in the new blades, but unfortunately, I did not know this information before I had already tossed the old blades in the trash. Is this the problem? Is there some place to get the proper metal inserts without having to buy the entire blade? Is there any solution shy of replacing the blades with new blades from the Toyota dealer (at a cost of about $50)?

I suspect from your description above, that all you replaced were the rubber elements not the entire blade. New blades can be bought at auto parts stores for as little as $30 for the pair. They are easy to replace by unlatching from the pivot point and reinstalling the replacement blade. At most places, someone can show you how to replace them.

No, I replaced the entire blade, not just the rubbers. I have done this with several of my past vehicles, but this would be the first time that I was supposed to keep a piece of the old assembly and fit it onto the new assembly, if that is the case. The new blade assemblies were Goodyear blades purchased at Costco. They were the correct size for my vehicle. However, I have since been made aware of a Toyota document concerning replacing the blades that contains the instruction to move the metal splines from the old rubber inserts to the new rubber inserts of the new blades. Unfortunately, this instruction is not in the owners' manual. :(

I changed the wipers several times on my 2010 Prius V; I normally used Bosch. I never had to re-use pieces from the original blades. Is this something particular to Costco and/or Goodyear blades?

The new blades you bought came with the rubber bits, and they have the metal strips? I'd assume yes. I'd guess this new blade is just not compatible with the windshield's curvature.

If you've indeed thrown the entire old blade out, in your shoes, I'd just give myself a kick or two, then get the Toyota assembly.

Can't say what a good aftermarket refill or blade is for the Gen III, I went with the OEM refill when ours started streaking. No more streaks and wiping clear again. FWIW, when I was driving our Gen II Prius, I was using the cheap Rain-X blades with good results, but have not tried them on this Gen III I am driving now.

I would suggest biting the bullet and go back with original equipment. Otherwise your only other choice is to live with what you have or try another brand.

    Best of luck to you.

I've been buying the Toyota OEM refills and have always been happy on how well they work. I've had many cars over the years and have found that aftermarket blades seldom work as well.

Yes, I would speculate the lack of the metal blade, which adds a tension, is your issue.

I am unsure where to buy metal insert replacements ...perhaps there is a local wrecking yard to you?

Else you could buy the OEM arm/ blade asm. or search other after market inserts (or blade).

    Stuff happens....good luck resolving.

Not sure what your talking about with the metal splines. I change blades on our 2010 every year with no problems. I have used Trico,Bosch, and rain X. Just throw away the old blade assy and install new one as you would on any other car. Never had a problem. Any auto parts store has them and not that expensive. They work just as good as the oem ones.

In my other cars I've been using the cheapest wiper blades I can find from eBay and I've been really happy with those. They sell exactly the same looking blades with Bosch labels here with price tag 50€ / pair and the ones I bought from eBay cost something like6-7€ / pair posted directly to my home. They wipe well, they last long and I tend to replace them every autumn when the rains start - even if there's actually nothing wrong with the current ones.
For Toyota Prius 2003 ON 24"16 Dynamic Wiper Blades Flat Windscreen U-Hook Arm | eBay

My Prius has always trusted the originals and I just tend to buy a refill blades whenever needed. However, next time I planned to try those eBay ones too. Just wasn't sure if there's the U-hook in Prius too?

I had this problem with all my cars so that's why I get nothing but OEM. Plus, they last longer too in my experience.

Our 2010, built in August 2009, is still on original wipers. Have around 63,000 km. The car is garage stored, maybe a factor. The wipers seem like new, work fine.

When I do get around to changing them, I'd just get the Toyota rubber blades, just the business bits, see no logic in replace the whole thing.

I always used to hate it when my jointed wiper blades would ice up in winter ... then they wouldn't make good contact at all, and I'd be pulling off the road multiple times on a trip to knock the snow off and free them up.

I know they used to sell rubber-booted jointed blades as "winter blades", which seemed like clunky overkill to me, but when I bought my Gen 1 in 2008, the Bosch Icon single-beam blades were out, and I thought, "great! no joints to freeze up!". Completely satisfied, but I switched to the less expensive Bosch Evolution when they turned up, and they're what's on my Gen 3 at the moment.

Ironically, of course, in these last eight winters, there's been scarcely enough snow to notice the improvement. But they do look sleek, and they wipe rain off...

(I'm not sure what this forum's view on necroposting is, so i apologize in advance if this is bothersome to anyone!)

I've been trying to replace the blades on my 2010, but everything leaves steaks/doesn't connect with the windshield correctly. I'll probably grab a new set of OEMs (the originals are long gone:().

What's a good price for those nowadays? Are the refills still available as well? I'll likely be going to a dealership for them.

    Thanks everyone!

    Thanks!

Extra bonus feature. Maybe vegetarians can opt out?

Oddly, there seem to be two part numbers for the left blade, and one is $10 more than the other (MSRP):

Wiper Blades. 2010 Toyota Prius Hatchback | Toyota

The refills are apparently all $9.99 MSRP,

Rubber Inserts. 2010 Toyota Prius Hatchback | Toyota

As always, you can click some individual dealers to see what their offering price is.

When I replaced my blades I notice they weren’t making 100% contact so I bent the blades slightly by hand. 100% contact after that.

I've ordered some OEM ones, I'll let y'all know if there's a good difference between them and the Rain-X ones. :)

Sometimes removing the blades and immersing them in a bucket of very hot water, then refit and operate.

The blades remold themselves to the screen, leaving a clean wipe with no gaps.

Always worth a try before replacing them.

Pulled the insert and washed it in dishsoap. It was making huge streaks, but maybe this will rove any of the residue it might have had on it.

I'm wondering if the seller sent me the correct ones. May request someone confirm the number on the arm of the driver's side wiper? This one says LG2 1461 J01T27HB.

    Thanks!!
