P0A80 Techstream Anomally

    Hi everyone,

    2006 Prius 126,000 miles
    Live on Kauai, HI

    Background:
    I’ve been having P0A80 issues for the past 4 months and have progressed from getting a Bluetooth OBDII scanner to getting techstream, removing the HV battery, repairing some broken voltage sensing tabs. Yes, I cleaned the battery fan. No there was not significant corrosion on the bus bars (besides the L bus bars on the center and end of the battery).
    The car has been randomly throwing the P0A80 code and I have been unable to purposely recreate it.

    Question:
    After looking through some data I recorded on Techstream I found this peculiar voltage reading.

    The “minimum block voltage” (and max) does not match the actual block voltage.

    Could this be causing the P0A80 to show up?

    Side note: is there a way to achieve a higher data rate for Techstream? It seems to only update values at 0.5 hz

    Yes that's the source of your P0A80... Your voltages are very low in that screen shot and the blocks that are colored are too far out of balance. First step is force charging your pack by putting the car in drive and putting your foot on the brake and flooring the accelerator. That's a crude way of charging and balancing. A more efficient way is to use grid charger from Maxx-Volts or hybridautomotive.com to do that.

    Also learn about reconditioning, which will restore capacity of your pack back to 96%

    As for the update value of 0.5hz you might be able to speed that up by using something new than than a Window XP emulator. Maybe find an old laptop with a newer version of Windows?

    Looking at those voltages, I'm hoping they're under a fairly high load. Were the readings taken while the car was accelerating? Were they from the very lowpoint of that downward voltage spike? I would think Block 2 is the obvious culprit, and what I would fix first, but who knows what else is lurking.

    I guess I could answer my own questions if I looked at the graph a bit closer, lol.

    I have been running tests on it for the past couple weeks. I have force charged it many times before, but I think you are right in that i need it reconditioned. Do you know the Delta SOC between modules that triggers a P0A80? Would the 0.62V difference in this instance trigger it?
    I would love to recondition my pack but this is currently my only vehicle and I am leaving Hawaii back to CA in 17 days... I did find a prius mechanic that could possibly do it for me while i use a spare module in the meantime.

    The thing I am concerned about if the Delta SOC needs to be higher is that my prius might be using the values for min and max block voltage. If that was the case then my prius would think its in a lot WORSE state then it is currently in.
    These values are from the same instance as above, Techstream says that Block 6 is the minimum voltage at 12.23 and the max is Block 3 at 14.17V but both of these are incorrect when reading the values for block 6 and 3 respectively. As TMR stated above Block 2 is suspect but only offers a 0.62V difference instead of the whopping 1.94V Difference from the Max and Min readings.

    I was on a smaller road so this is the hardest I could throttle without going over the speed limit.
    I tried to achieve the highest load possible attempting to find the bad modules.
