I always consider service and replacement costs before making any purchase.

    Unfortunately, most purchasers don't.

    That's why I passed on the plug-in.

Logistically, smaller numbers and lower demand means higher that cost; the opposite of the "economy of scale/"

agreed. i took a little risk for the technology, with the idea that i would get out before the warranty ended. now, i only have two more years

Meh, the Prius is a very reliable vehicle and how many pack issues get reported here for the plug-ins:whistle:?

If I use the comparison between our 2010 and then going to the 2019 Prime as an example and use solely gas savings:

    • 2010 Prius II averaged about 50 mpg under our ownership for 200k miles, which is 4000 gallons of fuel. If I use just the current price of $2.79 per gallon in my neck of the woods (it has been much higher through the 10 years we owned the 2010), that would be ~$11k spent on fuel
    • 2019 Prime has average 140 mpg for 23k miles. If I do similar math to above assuming I have the Prime for 200k miles (which is the minimum plan and I also have solar and charge at work which makes the electrons free), the same mileage produces 1,428 gallons of fuel at a cost of ~$4000.

So if the cost of a prime battery is close to the cost of a Gen1 PIP battery (I haven't looked nor do I expect to need to), wouldn't I be ahead when I hit 200k miles:).

    Everyone's equation is different ;).

But if you just consider certain factors you might only think of one way to solve problems. There's usually more than one way to do so(y).

I just bought mine from the dealer for $1,655, not counting core free. I hear folks are having them installed and the new pack for about $2,200 total.

Just like when the price dropped, only some dealers dropped the price and it took a while to propagate. Even to this day, there are no dealers within a day's drive of here that offer for anywhere near that price.

But the price has been going up for a year now. Again not all dealerships have updated the price and it will take time. I would think it also has to do with Toyota trying to drive away repairs of the Gen-2 and Gen-3 Prii considering their age now. It makes sense to make the repair high enough that you'd rather a new Prius than a new battery for your old Prius.

I called my local dealer an got crappy battery prices, too. I found several places that were $1650, but required several hours driving. When my local dealer sent a 25% off deal, I jumped on it. Price with Toyota install, 3 year nationwide Toyota warranty, car rental and taxes was $2145.

Check their internet prices. The phone prices are always higher at the dealers I go to.

Just called two local dealers - both gave me a price of $2588 msrp for the battery on my Gen 3.

Not sure why the internet prices are showing higher on some sites.

Is that for gen 2 or 3? For some reason toyota seems to charge about $400 more for a gen 3 than a gen 2.
