Bought a 2019 Prius LE w/ 190k miles!!

    Just bought a 2019 Prius LE w/ 190k miles (crazy), had some codes that I cleared, everything seems to be running and driving fine on it...

    What things should I get done on it or be checking, preventative maintenance, oil change, etc..?

    The transaxle would benefit from changing transmission oil, IMHO.

    Wow congratulations! How is that high of miles possibly?!?

    check the hybrid battery air filter under the back seat ASAP!

    At 200k it would be a good idea to clean the egr system+egr cooler.

    I already looked up Toyota dealer service history online, no history unfortunately, so it was likely fleet maintained

    It looks like it was maybe a chase car for semi trucks. Which would likely mean mostly all highway miles

    Did it have a frontal hitch on it?

    I mean, jeez, I know there are some chase vehicles out there, but for them to do that many miles in that short of time... I don't get what they would be doing. Chase vehicles for wide loads don't normally rack up huge miles with those slower speeds.

    I would change out all of the fluids and change oil to start. I would consider using the BG trio of EPR, MOA, and 44K before the oil change as well.

    Purely for data it'd be great if you could take a look at the EGR system to see if there is any build-up, but I totally understand not wanting to take that on.

    Didn't have a front hitch, but did have front and rear strobes installed on the windshield and rear hatch

    Thats a crap ton of miles, with it mostly being highway driven it should last many more. Age and Mileage dig into it equally. Being that its basically a two year old car, it should go much further without too much issues. I would say a transaxle flush would be a good to do maintenance item and maybe a flush of the fuel system and injectors maybe.

    Also, remember that a percentage (30, 20, 40?) of the driving probably didn't have the ICE running. You can check the lifetime EV% - trip meter to ODO. On the MFD:

    Just got the car from auction, cleared existing codes to see if any would come back, car felt like it was driving fine for the first few short trips.

    I had the temp sensor flash and then go away several times, finally it triggered a CEL code. Code was for coolant sensor, I checked the coolant level and it was completely empty and the coolant cap was barely on. I added coolant and CEL went away, but same thing happened again, pulled over to check and coolant was empty again. I did this several times having to fill the coolant reservoir until finally it stabilized and didn't go down again. No sign of coolant leaking on the ground anywhere....

    I checked on Toyota Owners History and saw there was a previous diagnostic done at the dealership in November, but there were no notes that told me what happened. After calling the dealership several times I finally got a response... Unfortunately Toyota dealership diagnostic says needs new engine. Blown head gasket and coolant in 2 of the cylinders.

    Anyone know how much it might be to replace a gen4 motor? The car is a 2019, does it use the same engine as 2016+?

    Is it possible to try to use a head gasket sealer product??? Has anyone had any luck with this before?

    If your coolant is disappearing, and your oil is clean with no coolant contamination, and no rough starts/misfires, the headgasket probably isn’t blown, and you have a coolant leak.

    When I first drove the car for the first several trips the engine started smooth and drove/ran fine. Then after the temp light came on and found the coolant empty, even after refilling coolant, I started noticing the engine shaking when it would start, and also as I would be driving I would feel the rpms or engine power start going down when I would be holding the throttle at a steady level

    I see that your in Orlando, maybe give a call to Tampa Hybrids, they would be probably a second or cheaper option to get the car back in working order again. I was wondering why someone who put on 190k miles in a year would sell the car for probably next to nothing instead of putting another 150 or 200k miles on it being that its so young in years. I think you got it figured out :( As far as the fix a engine using a 20 dollar additive it might be a good option if you want to try it but I think sooner than later your gonna have to do a seal or an entire engine on the car once it has a blown head gasket.

    Well shoot, this definitely sounds like the tried and true headgasket problem on the 1.8.

    unfortunately this is bad news, as I and many others were hoping Toyota fixed the headgasket issue on the updated 1.8 for the gen4.


    As you asked earlier, a 2016 engine will fit into your 2019 with no issues.
