2019 Prius V

    I need to buy a new car in the next 6 months. I understand the new Prius V will be an SUV. Does anyone have any more details or solid rumors? Any idea when we might see it? I’m looking for a small SUV. The Honda HRV and Subaru Crosstrek are also on my radar, but if the new Prius V will be available this winter I can get by with what I have for a while.

    There has been no further rumours about a Prius SUV since that spy shot from several years ago (2016?)

    It's possible the upcoming (but not officially announced) CorollaCross could make it over to North America but it's just speculation on our part.

    It became the Toyota Venza which is a similar shape awd hybrid. Now at the dealers. More luxury means more cost in this case.

    What was the final model year Prius v offered in Canada? 2018 or later? I know in the US the 2017 was the final model year. My mother-in-law wants to upgrade her 2017 Prius v and is considering buying a newer Canadian version and driving it down.

    I would not recommend a "newer Canadian v". It is still a gen3 engine with all of gen3's inherent problems. In the standard Prius the engine problems were fixed in 2016 as gen4.

    The new Venza is almost the same size with a superior 2.5L drivetrain and essentially the same cost considering it has the full safety tech package standard. I would have her drive a Venza LE. Plus it comes with a 10 year 150k hv battery warranty. I saw one at the dealer before discounts just below $32k.

    It's not as simple as just "driving it down". Here is a link to one of a number of articles on the internet about it: Importing a Used Car and Used Truck From Canada

    2018 was the final year for the Prius v in Canada. For 2018, Safety Sense P became standard which includes everything included in the Advanced Technology package on the U.S. market Prius v plus pedestrian sensing for PCS and lane keeping assist.     It's usually not possible to toggle the HVAC display to Fahrenheit on Canadian market Toyotas although the 2018 Prius v may still have a switch to change mph to km/h.

    IMO, a better choice would be a Venza or RAV4 hybrid or perhaps a plug-in RAV4 Prime.

    Thanks for all the info guys - the Venza does look pretty neat and something I could see her driving. I'll recommend she look at that model and let her know importing from Canada isn't a great idea, especially since the last model year was only a year newer (and she has the top model Five).

    Doesn’t seem like too much work. I guess as light as you don’t live in a CARB state since the battery warranty may not apply (but it’s a moot point since 2020 as Toyota extended the battery warranty to 10 years/150,000 miles anyway).

    During the years when the exchange rate was at par with the Greenback, there were a noticeable number of US-Spec cars in Canada. Aside from getting it inspected and paying taxes at the border, you had to ensure it had DRLs (without a defeat switch) and French labels (which can be added after the fact).

    It wouldn't be very hard for Toyota to make a Camry Hybrid wagon. For man many years, the wagon variant was available for the Camry.

    Where’s the market for it? The only non-luxury wagon to sell is the Outback. And that’s after they killed off the regular Legacy wagon. Even the Regal TourX didn’t fare well (and I thought it was actually a decent product and good competitor to the Outback).

    I’d love to see the return of wagons but to market it at the Camry’s price point, it’s hard to give it some personality. You’d have to creep up to entry level luxury (which the Outback does creep into in the upper trims).

    I'll keep my 2012 Prius v as long as I can. I prefer not becoming an indentured wage slave to make some stranger who cares nothing about me think I'm rich.

    Newer Prius v WILL have revised pistons and rings (supposedly less prone to oil consumption issues, down the road), as of model year 2015 IIRC. You can verify by querying part no’s on online parts sites, say McGeorge Toyota Parts for example.

    Inverter, ABS, EGR, Intake Oil, Head Gasket, Water Pump, etc. Yes one problem with oil consumption is probably gone by 2016 on a v. My point was stay away from gen3 just because you like the v's form factor. Add some letters to the v and you have venza.
