Ok, now I am totally confused! The car has been sitting since Tuesday I finally got some time after work today to see whats was up. The keyless entry worked so I tried to start it and it fired right up no hesitation the battery level is about 7/8's I drove it around the block and no issues. Any ideas what the problem was on Tuesday do you think I still need to change the 12v battery? or think it's something else completely.

That startup, run for just a few seconds, shut down, sit overnight and startup again is known to cause shaking/knocking. Unburnt fuel, or humidity, not decisive, but it happens.

It happened to me once a few years back, and I resolved to avoid that scenario. I’ve stuck to that and no repeats of the issue.

Still, failing head gasket can cause similar symptoms, and periodically cleaning egr and intake seems to keep that at bay.

It's not acting like it did when the head gasket went. It just quit work while running then nothing worked no dashboard lights, the door locks would not work I couldn't even shift into natural if I needed to tow it. Now it's fine.

Just to be clear, there is no alternator in a Toyota hybrid. The 12v battery gets charged from the hybrid battery which gets charged from the petrol engine and/or regenerative braking.

How old is your 12v battery?

The battery is 12 yrs old. I now know that there is no alternator in the prius it is just acting like there was dying while running for no other apparent reason

That's the 12v battery that is 12 years old? If so, yours has lasted longer than most. Even though your Prius dying that time shouldn't have been related to the 12v, the failure to restart might have been. If you want to keep the Prius, I would replace the 12v for reliability going forward.

But, another thing to consider, if your hybrid battery is also 12 Y.O., you are at risk of that failing soon. Since your trade in value with that many K is very low, I'd keep running it until the hybrid battery goes out, then shoot the vehicle.

How do you test the hybrid battery?

I might be wrong but somehow it feels like ur car keys battery died. Ur prius was READY initially then soehow turned off. Then when u tried to start it, it wont respond. You let it set. Now Ny weak 12v by this point would give up but your car started yeaterday. Change car FOB batteries

Got the new (12v) battery in yesterday without any trouble, and took the car for a bit of a test, it may be me but it seemed to run smoother. Still waiting for the OBD2 scanner to arrive to see what is going on with the rest of the system.

Aren't you glad you didn't shoot it?
500,000 clicks are only about 310,000 real-world miles, and while this represents a vehicle that's about 90 years old in human terms if it's still healthy I don't think that it's time to euthanize it.

Besides.....You're Canadian!.......the heck are you gonna shoot it WITH? ;)
