    I was replacing the belt on my Prius, when I noticed that a part near the exhaust manifold was covered in what seems to be specks of burned oil (IMG-5356_outlined.jpg). Some searching seems to suggest that this is an exhaust heat shield or insulator (part number 1716821030).

    Could the splatter that's shown have been caused by carelessly refilling the oil without a funnel? The car seems to run fine...for now.

    It could be something flung up from the road.

    I've had several cases of wheel bearing grease that ended up on my car......but came from a different vehicle.

    Clean it off and keep an eye on it for a while.

    Hi - Don't know if you figured this out or fixed it yet. That splatter is CV grease from your passenger side front CV axle boot. It is most likely torn and needs to be replaced.

    I don’t know about VVT grease that whole area would be wiped out it’s leaking from high above like oil over flowed from over filling it like he said.

    looks almost road tar like. Get can of spray carb cleaner and with engine cool clean it all off best you can and see if it recurs.

    Keep eye on engine oil level. Keep it exactly at the full line always so you can keep track of it. Only place the oil can leak from there is failed valve cover gasket.

    how many miles on the car?

    @RichG

    Absolutely NAILED it. The CV boot has a leak and is slinging its CV joint lubricant.

    I just swapped a set of front axles and wheel hubs on a 2005 last Saturday. What you have going on there is identical.

    The arrow points to what is CV joint lubricant, so the boot is likely split in that area.

    You guys are phenomenal! I logged in this AM to look something up and found your feedback. Just in time for a scheduled break pad replacement.

    Can't thank you both enough.
