Better the charger than your car. It's interesting to see how little goes into the stall chargers.

 

How would they enforce compliance? First, have a slightly modified charging station that dumps out all the handshake data between the car and the charger. This data gets emailed to the account. For example, an EVgo account has an email that goes with it. So these logs get sent to them. Note that all chargers must be logging all this info internally already.

So now when you go to the DMV to register your DIY EV car they ask you to send or bring in a copy of the email that shows you have a compliant EV charger.

It's sometimes hard to just report a broken station. I'd be very surprised to see any type of policing. BUT they now have protection:

Chargers are usually parking spots near the entrance/building. IF there is a fire AND the edifice burns down- "Well, they were illegally using our station, we don't have any fault/culpability."

came across an article about gas station filling rules. The chances of an issue while filling with the car running are low, and there isn't any evidence of a cell phone starting a gas station fire, but stations still have signs prohibiting those things for liability purposes.

 

Speculation, the biggest cell phone hazard are those who try to talk while filling and splash gas everywhere.

Per news reports... It's not the cell phone itself that caused fires. It was going back to the car to get the phone, leaning in and building a static charge in the process. The next element is reaching for the nozzle while it's filling, causing a spark from your hand to the nozzle. The last element is nozzles that don't trap the vapors.

It was hard to replicate, but they managed it.

 

People were going back into their car while filling, and starting fires from the static charge long before there were cell phones. The specific concern with cell phones is inattentiveness while using.

 

Maybe they were looking for the coin slot.
