cracking noise brakes...(is this correct English...?)
I recently replaced Pin, Front Disc Brake Cylinder Slide and Boot, Bush Dust, caliper dust cover, brake pads. I tried to bleed as good as possible ..not the official way but more in a traditional way...now i get this awful sound when braking..brakes seem to work fine, no problems...see clip...

    Oh dear!
You don’t mention your skill-set on this subject, if you feel or are confident, please disassemble again and recheck EVERYTHING as you assemble and build up the brakes.
Toyota have set procedures on working on their braking systems, ensure you’ve got the correct procedures and protocols, if you are uncertain, seek professional help. The last thing we want is a brake failure and critical incident.

You really NEED to take it to a Toyota shop to finish the job properly.
A proper bleed is necessary and that's tricky on a system with ABS and traction control.

Also, strange loud noises tends to indicate that you did something wrong that needs to be corrected.

You likely won't know if the brakes really are working fine until you get into a panic stop situation........and then it will be too late.

2nd gen Prius repair manual doesn’t offer a non-Techstream method to bleed air out of the brake lines.

If you want to do the Techstream method (requires special OBD cable, and Techstream on a laptop), I can post Repair Manual excerpt, and hopefully others will chime in, more conversant in second gen brake issues, and Techstream install/usage.

If that seems too much to take on, dealership service department can sort it out.

Autel Maxisys, Launch x431 & TexaIDC will also handle the Prius brake service modes, I have these scan tools so can confirm.

I dont believe I did something wrong...but I like to know what causes this..?
I can order a OBD scanner capable of bleeding the official way or take it to the shop but does this solve the problem..?

no one is berating you...... Prius braking system is not the “normal/ordinary” system and has a set procedure for bleeding.

I asked what you’re skillset was, you haven’t replied
I asked you to recheck EVERYTHING, you haven’t replied.

To be SAFE, my advice is to take this vehicle to a professional

in answer to your last post....... it’s impossible to diagnose your can with the current information
    And
The OBD leg of a “scanner” will only give you OBD information, good for the engine but useless with the braking system.
You’ll need to go down the manufacturers service specific leg.
(One leg for OBD, one leg for manufacturers service specific vehicle)

I told u I replaced several parts and tried bleeding the traditional way...that should be sufficient i guess, I am a fairly good DIY.. im not a professional. And yes I rechecked everything several times..everything looks fine and NO braking problems...
I now wanna replace shims and check suspension as i read in another post....
and if I buy scanner it is like i said capable of bleeding Prius brakes...and if that doesnt help i take it to the dealer...thank u!

yes I’m a professional vehicular diagnostician.

An OBD scanner will not help you bleed the brakes.

A good level of diy skill should be good. If you are happy with the braking system, then I’d say be happy with the job.

This is my last post on this subject, I can’t help you further, stay safe and keep well.

I just took my car for a test drive...amazing braking power...I drove 20-25 miles p/hour and hit the brakes real hard and came to immediate stop....I noticed the slip indicator light (..or traction control...?) flashed few times...no beeping, is that a good thing, does it mean the ABS Anti-lock brake system/VSC is operating like it should...and brakes are fine?

Well, I'll rush in anyway. OP hasn't said whether the noises of concern are still there or not.

If the noises are gone, and there are no warning lights, and the brakes seem to be functioning including ABS and VSC and regen, things are probably pretty good and the car can be responsibly, cautiously driven to a shop to have the bleeding properly completed if there is any question.

The OP should not assume that "the traditional way" gets the system properly bled, depending on where the system was opened. From the first post, I'm not even sure where or why the system was opened at all. If I add punctuation in the first post where I guess it should go, the job was to replace "Pin, Front Disc Brake Cylinder Slide", "Boot, Bush Dust", "caliper dust cover", and "brake pads". None of those items necessarily required opening the system in a way that would require bleeding. (I typically crack a bleeder open while compressing to accommodate new pads, but only letting fluid out, not air in.) So it's possible the OP has left out some description of the work that was done.

If only a small amount of air was let in and only at the calipers, it may be possible to get away with "the traditional way" of bleeding it out.

    1. the noises are present when i press the brake pedal while slowly drivin forwards or backwards and coming to a complete stop..i cant judge this while drivin....at least then all is quiet..
    2. no warning lights
    3. no problems what so ever..
    4. i never said/assume bleeding the traditional way is ok...please read carefully
    5. the system was opened when i removed back brakes caliper and replaced piston ring set

    THANK U!

If the concerning sound is still present, one thing I might suggest would be to post another recording. Something I noticed about your recordings in the first post is that they were very brief, and several sounds were present, and it might not be obvious to the listener exactly which sounds are the ones concerning you. That makes it harder for any readers of your post to make the determination whether they have "experienced the same problem".

There was a past thread some years ago (which I'm having trouble finding or I would link it here as an example) where it was helpful to go so far as to load the poster's sound file into software like Audacity, screenshot the waveform and spectrum displays, highlight a portion and ask "is this the bit you're asking about?" Or you could upload such a screenshot yourself with the portion of interest highlighted.

This thread was a similar example, though a bit simpler than the one I'm not finding.

In any case, it would be helpful for your recording to be of longer duration, and if you could find a way (if possible) to record with fewer other sounds present or to drive the car in a way that separates them more.

Generally on PriusChat we do hope to be helpful, and it shouldn't be seen as personal if we aren't sure what to assume about your knowledge or skills. We don't know you, is all. There is a kind of recurring pattern on forums though, where quite often the posters who most adamantly say things like "lot of research before even startin a job...i know how Prius brake system works" turn out to be the most difficult to explain anything to. That isn't necessarily so in your case, but it is a pattern many of us have banged our heads against before.

    Thank you...
maybe i try to post another vid if this one doesnt make sense...
well sometimes its alot of personal to me it seems..
I dont know other people knowledge and skills as well..
but some answers really dont add nothinhg at all...somethings broken ...somethings wrong...go to the dealer....visit the shop...if u dont know how prius works....wauw...dangerous man..
    to me...panic football.. no good
looks like some think they know it all ....
i have great deal of knowledge concerning Prius ....im very interested in how this vehicle works and take alot of material, service manuals etc. to study...
just want to know what others think about some problems that arise...and trust me there aint a problem i cannot fix in the end..
...but hey I LOVE PRIUSCHAT and the people on it and the ones who started it...and don´t intend to leave..dont get me wrong!

    Hello there once again..!

Like I suspected and this is been going on for some time ...I once again replaced the (after market) cylinder guide pins with the original ones ....and re-greased everything..problem solved...for now ...next time I make sure I get some new decent OEM pins and like Toyota calls it..lithium soap base glycol grease....wow!
Saved me some time and money. again..who needs dealer or Toyota shop? Who said proper bleed is necessary..nobody´s?
Who´s scared to get their hands dirty...Not the real die hard DIY....like I said...:-(
    TOPIC CLOSED

    Greeting all!

    Congrats!

If you do have the chance to upload a clearer recording at some point, that can make this thread even more useful to others who may be having a similar sound, as they'll be able to confirm their sound is like yours.

The Toyota lithium soap based glycol grease is 08887-01206.

I get a small number of hits for that part number, mostly from sites in .ru domains or with Cyrillic characters in them.

However, the 08887-01206 number is still what is shown on parts.toyota.com with no indication of any supersession.

I would continue to use the 08887-01206 part here absent an announcement by Toyota that it has been superseded.

While parts.toyota.com covers the US market, perhaps the -83010 number is an equivalent that is available in certain other markets. Sometimes @Elektroingenieur has insights into those things.
