What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today????

    Installed a set of these SAFE window visors. Overall a good fit, thought they don't trace the window curves perfectly. We'll see how the adhesive tape holds. Have already done a freeway trip without issue and didn't notice any change in wind noise or mpg.

    Also, added a rear bumper protector. Confused as to whether it's OEM or not. It has a part number likes it's OEM. Either way, looks stock and good to me.

    Last but not least, I hired a crew to run the ship while i'm away! :cool: The fit isn't great (it's too short and too wide), but it's doable.

    Why only one? Best to replace both because they should both have same mileage on them.
    Unless the drivers side had been replaced.
    What brand did you use? Hopefully not trq. They are crap!

    Even though two bearings from the same lot theoretically have the same Mean Time To Failure, the 'mean' is the topmost point on a distribution curve that can be sort of wide.

    When one of my Gen 1's bearings went out, I replaced it. The next one was needed 50,000 miles and three years later. The other two I never replaced in the time I had the car, leaving me with money and effort that I never had to put in.

    It's not like there's a huge economy of scale to doing two of them at once. If we were talking about two bearings inside the transmission or something, with hours of disassembly work and then they're both right there, that could be different.

    But replacing two wheel hubs is pretty much the same work as replacing one hub, twice. May as well do as needed, and keep the money on hand so it can go to whatever other unforeseen issue might crop up in the meantime.

    Or, it could lock up on you. ORRRR fall apart, OORRR get super noisey and/or hot. :)

    Hmm, "lock up".

    Is that what happened to the first one, I wonder?

    That hasn't been the failure mode of any wheel bearing I have ever replaced. I guess my mileage must vary.

    I did an impromptu acceleration test today since the newer battery is in. I found a couple of other times that I had previously posted and it’s competitive, but at the end of the day, it’s still a Prius

    It was noisy as hell. Same with driver rear a few years back.

    Right, "noisy" I've dealt with. When it happens, I change the bearing.

    So far I have yet to change any wheel bearing preemptively out of fear it would surprise me with a "lock up".

    Between the dealerships and independent shops I've worked at I've changed several noisy
    wheel bearings.
    And twice, siezed bearings, one broken apart.

    I've never been in a plane crash, but they do crash.

    Don't know how to explain to you want siezed means....

    No, of course that's not what I asked. You were working in a shop, on two occasions cars were brought in, and at the time you saw them, they both had bearings that were seized and needed to be replaced.

    What was the information you had, and how far back did it go, of the history of development of symptoms in those two vehicles, ultimately leading up to their being brought to your shop with seized bearings?

    I wound imagine, a worn hub bearing that gets ignored/driven on for so long that it finally seizes up. A hub bearing will wear out, it’s just a matter of time. And as it wears, it will exhibit an audible howl, which will get worse as time goes on. I’ve replaced several hubs on both my vehicles. 2 on the Prius so far, both at rear position. This recent hub was so bad, my son could feel it on the other tire as I rotated the wheel. It’s an easy job, with the correct tools.

    Yes, that's the typical history that I would expect. The question, though, is still part of a followup to post #18665 where it was suggested that if you don't replace a symptom-free bearing at the same time you replace a different one that had symptoms, you could face a surprise seizure of the symptom-free one.

    That's why #18671 was talking about two instances of seized bearings seen in a shop, and that's why the obvious followup question is about the symptom history of those two vehicles before they arrived at the shop. I also have a guess, but I'm not who was in the shop or worked on the vehicles.

    Clearly no one advises putting off bearing replacement when you have symptoms. That won't always end well.

    It's not worth the effort to even think about.

    I purchased a 2018 Three Touring edition yesterday and got it washed. I am now currently looking for an aftermarket shocks/struts system to make the ride better.
