When I set light to "Auto", the multi-function display switches off?

New V owner here. 2017 V four USA version.
Last evening as it was getting dark, I noticed the headlights did not come on. I saw that they were set to "DRL off", so I switched to "auto." That brought up the headlights lights, but the gauges etc., in the multi-function display went off. No speedo even. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some setting or switch that I've missed?

Yeah there's a "day mode" and a "night mode" setting for brightness for the instrument panel and the MFD. It seems like the previous owner dimmed it down or switched it off.

Look for the rheostat for the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel, below the vent. It's a vertically oriented rotary switch. Use that to adjust the brightness of the instrument panel.

As for the MFD, it seems weird but there should be a button somewhere that's says something like SETUP or DISP. That should help you navigate to the brightness/contrast setting for the MFD. You can do it during the day to familiarise yourself with the steps before trying it at night.

Actually, the next day the system seemed fine set to auto. However, I still upped the light setting to full. If it turns out to be too bright, I'll deal with it then.

Is it possible that the ambient light sensor was blocked, when you originally turned off the ‘Auto Lights’ setting?
