Washington state to ban diesel and gas cars by 2030

    Sounds like you'll be able to drive there. But Washington residents won't be able to buy and register "gas burners" starting 2030.

    most of these dates get pushed back when compliance becomes difficult. it will be interesting to watch.

    LoL ya good luck with that one. what Washington will realize is that ALL if it's residents have titled their cars in South Dakota, and all that sales tax is gone

    I believe we residents will be able to continue re-registering our existing vehicles. But we won't be able to register non-electric vehicles of Model Year 2030 or later.

    So my spouse, still driving the Integra I bought for her more than 30 years ago, can keep driving it beyond 40 years ...
    It appears to be an aspirational date, with preconditions that seem unlikely to be met on that schedule.

    A goal is established that all publicly and privately owned passenger and light duty vehicles of model year 2030 or later sold, purchased, or registered in Washington state be electric vehicles, contingent upon a road usage charge or equivalent vehicle miles traveled fee or tax being in effect in Washington with at least 75 percent of registered passenger and light duty vehicles in Washington participating."


    Except for military transfers, that already doesn't fly on any sizable scale with the existing fleet.

    I'll be curious to see how it plays out. When gas stations can't get loans to modernize or repair, I imagine most of them will sell into redevelopment and come out as condos or retail unrelated to cars.

    Can't wait to see how they get groceries into all of the Food Wholes in that state.
    I guess all of the trucks will stop at the border and lighter their cargo into the state using...what?
    Gas burners?
    Electric delivery trucks?

    I'd like to pose a ban on all wood burning as well. Say NO to hydropower, which damages land, destroys vast expanses of habitat, and also build up silt which contributes to climate change. No fossil fuels, and a complete cutoff of natural gas lines. Have a great day Washington.

    According to the news this ban won't effect vehicles with GVRW's over 10,000lbs.

    Guessing the F-10050 will get real popular up there?

    Just stepping back, I applaud the spirit going into setting a date and picking a goal, but without allocating resources to untangle the very real complications of unhooking from oil and hooking up to electric this is just another mattress tag law.

    ^ That's one of the wonderful things about living in our 52 state laboratory of democracy.

    Washington state is big enough for this idea to be given a real-world test run.

    If you are actually paying any attention at all to what the experts are saying, the climate change problem is worse than is generally reported.
    We have ALREADY crossed the threshold where things like melting permafrost releasing methane makes it a self worsening problem.
    If we stopped producing 100% of our present greenhouse gasses tomorrow.......it wouldn't solve the problem.

    So, what is the proximate cause ? Too many people.
    But even eliminating 100% of them likely wouldn't solve the problem either......for several thousand years or so.

    Already answered back at post #6. According to the legislative bill summary I posted over the weekend, this covers only "passenger and light duty vehicles". And this is only a goal, contingent upon having first reached a very specific milestone. One that seems rather unlikely to be met on that schedule.

    Whole Foods will simply need to quit using passenger cars, minivans, and common pickup trucks to receive their groceries, and shift to something known as "tractor-trailers".

    Even box vans (e.g. bread trucks) could fit into that category. 10,000lbs isn't even commercial driver's license territory.

    An unintended consequence could be people trading the F150 for a F350.

    Inslee vetoes 2030 target for electric vehicles set by Washington Legislature


    "The measure, due to a Senate amendment, could only take effect once lawmakers approved a road user fee for most state vehicles. Inslee embraces the 2030 target, but does not think its fate should be tied to movement on another front.

    “Setting and achieving a goal of 100 percent electric vehicles is too important to tie to the implementation of a separate policy like a road usage charge,” Inslee said in a written statement explaining his Thursday rejection of the measure."

    When are people - yes, that includes lawmakers - going to discover that banning something does not solve the problem.

    Making more efficient choices available and allowing people to discover that the old, inefficient ways cost them money. They'll change without being forced to then.

    Seems a little short sighted. A shift to "100%" EVs will require alternate funding means to keep roads in repair. I can see why not having the EV bill tied to a road usage fee might be a better way to get it done, but not having the usage fee bill runs the risk of it not being addressed before a revenue shortfall occurs from less ICE cars running around.
