air filter for hybrid battery + instructions for cleaning fan + battery

For the last year and a half I have been trying various material to filter out the hair and dirt i usually see inside batteries. I tried thin material that was not vary porous. That did not work. What has worked was very porous material that is 7/16 inch thick. It filters out all but the very fine dirt which sticks to the fan but I found nothing on the battery.

I got some molds made and the filters are now available.

I have also written up 10 pages of instructions on how to install the filter, how to clean the fan and the ducts and how to clean out the battery. The instruction allow you to skip the battery cleaning if the fan is not that dirty or just install the filter.

On the 2010 to 2015 Prius I see dirt and hair in the small passages between the battery modules and lines of dirt and hair that show up on in the bottom of the battery case. This hair and dirt was at the bottom of the passages.I see dirt and hair in most of the batteries I take apart.
So if you do not have a good filter you should to clean out the fan and the battery on a regular bases depending on how much you use the back seat etc.


A lot of work which can be avoided with a ten dollar washable filter which can be accessed with one bolt.

 

Yes toyota has one but it just restricts the hole size. The holes are not so small that you can not still suck in dirt and hair there is no defense in depth. With a thick porous filter the air has to go through a maze. Hair is going to get caught and a lot of the dirt. Plus since my filter is right up against the vent you can see when it gets dirty. The filter is washable with water (garden hose).

 

What you found is the Toyota snap on that has smaller holes than the original vent.. Hair and dirt can still be sucked in.
My filter has 1/10 inch holes (little air flow irestriction) but seven layers of them so hair can not possibly get through and only the finest dirt does (not a problem). It last the lifetime of the car but does need to be inspected and vacuumed in place as needed. It can also be taken out and rinsed with a garden hose if necessary. We provide two sticker to remind you to inspect and clean the filter as needed.

Also since it is not a snap on but goes behind the grill passengers can not mess with it.
