I recently buy 2014 prius v5 with28k miles. I drove her about 1600 miles. I usally drive city by my self 160 pound, tire pressure 40 on all tires. I use pulse and glide techneqe and still getting 30 mpg.. there is no recall on this modal dealer did reprogramed before sale. I changed engine filter, cleaned ev fan and vent but no gain... last drive with full tank 350 miles with 11 gallon fillup.

These cars can get 36 mpg at 85 mph and certainly the epa 41/42 mpg at normal speeds. I might look at the brakes and see if they are dragging. Check the air filter and make sure it's not clogged. Maybe a clogged catalytic converter but I would think you would get a check engine. I assume no lights are on indicating some engine codes.

    1. Compute your MPG by hand, not using the car's computer display. More accurate across multiple tanks.
    2. Set the display to instantaneous readouts of MPG and observe. In what circumstances does the readout seem low? Up hills, down hills, accelerating, at constant speed? What is the speed that seems to display 42 MPG?
    3. Where are you located? What sort of trips? Long cruises? Short? Hot? Cold?

Lets see if we can get any clues.

If you exhaust all the good ideas that the above forum members listed, pull your spark plugs & do a compression test
    on your motor.

For comparison, my son has a 2015 Prius v 5 and says he averages 42 mpg US in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Is that a typo or does the car only have 28K miles? That is extremely low!

My 2013 V with almost 70K miles has lifetime average of over 47 (actual fill-up calculated) MPG. The only time mine falls below 40 MPG is during near or sub zero F temperatures during the (Minnesota) winter. With warmer 50-60F spring temps right now I'm getting over 50MPG.

According to your profile you must have the only AWD-e Prius v in existence. I do not think Toyota had even invented that in 2013.

My son’s Prius v has never had any firmware updates that I remember. He only gets that if due to a recall.

I don't know what year his prius is but there have been three to try and protect the inverter that will blow.
When the inverter blows they might get a bit tense without the updates.
Have him run his vin through the toyota site.

What do you want a picture of? My Fuelly icon is accurate and I have entered every fill-up since I bought the car in Jan 2015.
