No, considering at one point, you could get it for $17,000 in California after rebates and tax credits.

Of course that is a lot of money, but as a company fleet car that the drivers find hard where to charge overnight, it is an option.

If there is a hydrogen station near them. Looks like you'd have to travel to Barcelona for a fill.

It is a huge problem though. Bigger than what plug ins face.

Hydrogen FCEV personal cars have likely already failed because of it. There are less models available than plug ins now. There is the Mirai and the Nexos now. A GM/Honda FCEV should be coming out in the near future, and Audi seems to still have interest. BMW will have a SUV in couple of years. This is a product from their partnership with Toyota; carbon fiber tech for fuel cells. Doesn't sound like BMW is planning to keep production up past the first production run though.

VW and Diamler have gotten out of FCEV cars, and are only working on commercial trucks. Which might be all the others are doing, if they haven't abandoned hydrogen all together.

    2 of the most noticeable points from this read follow;
    besides high cost .......
that works out to easily over €800 per hp. Can you imagine if it had 150 or 200 hp?
It must have an extremely small amount of platinum in its fuel stack.
so yea that'll get on down - but passing traffic? pulling a grade? Might be sketchy - even w/out a load of cargo.
Fully loaded van - will go thru a good amount of fuel - and with an average cost of 10€ per kg, it better come w/ free fuel cards like they do over here. Makes the Mirai look like a real bargain.

This is a tiny van mostly for local use. It's about a foot shorter in length than the Mazda5 or Rav4. It is likely using the same design approach as Nissan's ethanol FCEV's; big battery with small fuel cell. That fuel cell had maybe 10% of the power output of the Mirai's. Don't overlook the torque, it is 167 lb-ft.

There are three fuel cell vehicles that I am aware of:. Mirai, Nexo, and Clarity.

Wanted to check out the new Mirai today dropped by Longo with my wife and kid. Got sidetracked to seeing the long line of used Gen 1s. Looked like a family and a couple pulled the trigger on the first generation this afternoon. Same old issue, wife would want to trade either our Clarity PHEV or our Panamera GTS. No thank you in my opinion, not for a 1st Gen.

Who knows, may go back tomorrow. A gen 1 would be a good first car for my son since he has a station on campus, but doesn't make sense to trade nor give up waiting on a Y or Cybertruck. Didn't get to see the inside of the new one nor test drive one. Which was what I wanted to check out, lease rates being in the $5xx range and only $2500 down...

Very well could be driver behavior.
The article once again misuses the term “promised mileage”.
The mileage listed is that reached by testing according to specific rules.

Now, these numbers are self reported, so if it turns out the vehicle doesn’t get that range when run through the test, then the automaker should be held responsible.

Got to test drive one today, my wife felt the car was wobbly/unstable. I checked the tire pressures and they were shown at 42, 43 PSI. I checked the door jamb and it's supposed to be 33 PSI all around, roughly 7 PSI over. Would have made for a much more comfortable/stable ride I suspect. The car is beautiful inside and has great features packed in the XLE trim, (with ATP option). No Limiteds in stock....

EDIT- Oh that rear middle seat, is kind of cramped, even for my petite wife (5.0 ft). The middle tunnel is huge I initially thought there is a driveshaft running down the center but after reading up I don't think so. One would have to share the foot wells wit
Splitting one foot in the left and right rear passenger footwells. Shrugs...

It is a hydrogen tank in the 'transmission' tunnel. Not directly because of the tank, the previous generation was only a four seater, and Toyota used the Volt solution to get the fifth seat in.

The Limited is listed as $16,500 more than the XLE.

Toyota makes up for it some with $8000 more discount. $25000 vs $17000, (until January 31 as of now).

That tunnel is BIG. I should have taken a picture. My sister-in-law was with us. My wife got in that middle seat and first thing she said was "how come you look so tall". My wife is short. I can see the top of her head when we stand together....

Besides the crampness it is really luxurious and drives luxuriously. Too bad the pressures were not adjusted from what they mount the tires/ship the cars with. Steering felt firm car well planted (no surprise at it's weight and huge tires). Brakes felt fine...

I finally found the odometer after our one lap of the test drive route and it was 10 or 11 mi. Brand spanking new.

The Softex/aka fake leather feels just like real leather, without the fresh leather scent. My son, somewhat recent vegan/animal lover, would approve....

The big issue nowadays seems to stem from availability of hydrogen fuel. There's a website that maps the stations and hydrogen availability:

Stations Map | California Fuel Cell Partnership

My son has a station on CSULA campus so that helps while he's a student there....

I had a chance at picking up a used Mirai for around $4XXX with the intent of doing a drivetrain swap

Sadly at the time shipping was massive

now days it might actually make financial sense to driveswap a cheap used Mirai but the prices are quite a bit higher for them, which amazes me considering the even worse hydrogen supply issues.

What good is a car that only has fuel half the time?

They had a cut away display at the dealer, which did not show that center tank. I now saw it in a different image online. Makes sense now. The image online and that huge tunnel.

They are really subsidized by government and (in a big part) manufacturer incentives.

True Zero seems to be a company putting up stations. I want to go up to one and take a look at pricing/kg...

The dealer might of had the cutaway for the gen1 Mirai. It had two hydrogen tanks. Both were mounted across the car's width. The big one was behind the rear seats, taking up much of the trunk, and the other one below rear seat. In terms of packaging, I don't recall anything in the way for a fifth seat, so the 4 seats might have been because of weight.

The current Mirai moves the tank under the rear seat to the middle tunnel. The tunnel top is almost as high as the rear seat bottom. The passenger has to straddle it like the battery tunnel in the gen2 Volt. A third hydrogen tank was added, and it sits behind the rear bumper.

Images of the rear seat and cutaways will come up in a search.
