I stopped for a light near Polaris mall yesterday. I was on Polaris Parkway at the Gemini cross street. I noticed a panhandler on the corner with his cardboard sign.

The irony is that there are about 6 restaurants on Gemini within a 1/4 mile of that intersection with "Help Wanted" signs in their windows.

Panhandling either pays better or he prefers working outdoors.

Or the help they want excludes him.

Help wanted is not the same as 'anyone who walks in, gets hired'.

Our area cautions people to never give them money- contribute to a jobs skill center for the homeless instead. There are billboards near the most popular sites detailing this caution in the big city near us with the help centers web address an phone number for those who wish to donate.

I do not have a problem with pan handlers, but my sympathy for them stops well short of giving them a handout....unless they take me up on the offer for some proffered food.
My thinking is that the only thing that would be worse for THEM than ME giving them cash would be for my beloved dot.gov to display their boundless compassion by giving them other people's money.

My pastor's wife fulfilled a lifelong dream of establishing one of those fancy cupcake shops a few years ago, since then only saved from the Covids by the fact that our state leaders are not part of the 'science and data' crowd.
She befriended an early teen homeless person who refused cash but would sometimes come into the shop to use the restroom and get warm or in out of the rain.
She caught him more than once "stealing" BLEM cupcakes out of the dumpster after business hours and thereafter made sure that a number of those (and good ones not donated to LEOs, Schools, etc) were "thrown away" in boxes.
Since the next-over little town that they live in suffers pan handlers even less willingly than MY small city, this kid was barn-cat nervous, and we never really learned what his back story is/was.
He was going to the nearby school according to our youth group but even some of the common-sense states in the South had to close their schools briefly during the opening days of the Rona, and he moved on.

Since our church is active in helping out some of the local women's shelters I can confidently assert that NOT all panhandlers and the homeless are there because of sloth, bad life choices, money mismanagement or any of the other hurtles that life throws at all of us, and not all of them can make local shop owners take down their "Help Wanted" signs.

Some people.....actually ALL people fail to clear ALL of life's hurtles. ;)

    ACTUAL mileage may vary.....

a lot of people have mental illness. i suggest anyone who thinks panhandling is more enjoyable than working should try it first.

I tend to agree and I have "Zero," interest in taking up that "challenge."

Giving a panhandler 5 bucks, has "Zero," impact on my life and I am not rolling in the dough as it were. But an unexpected side benefit of losing our Denali in an accident (I luv'd that Beast) was we "inherited a Gen 2," to replace it!

And at the time I did a lot of driving and the "Denali," could not pass a Gas Station, without stopping in for a "Drink, daily." And I live by a Maverick's!

But time moves on, and in the "Prius?" LOL, I no longer make daily visits to our local Mavericks. So five buck's no longer makes a difference to me in getting to work the next day. So these day's the 5 buck's that would have gone to the Oil Company's, now goes to a "Pan Handler," if I happen to see one?

And no I don't know (the how are why of why they are there?) but I "assume," that if they are out there on the street. pan handling? There life must be more messed up then mine? I could be wrong of course and if they are doing it as a "Scam?" I say more power to them!

And if they are, five bucks may make a difference to them on that day? If they are not, really in need? Well more power to them. Thinking I helped someone in a small way ... is good enough for me. :)
