My 09 second gen base model has warning light and codes for the Inverter water pump to be replaced. The dealer, and also my local toyota repair shop said the part is on 4 week back order due to covid. Another shop I called said definitely to not use an aftermarket pump. Am I screwed waiting 4 weeks? Is the aftermarket part that bad?

    Thanks in advance

Two weeks ago, I bought an inverter pump from my local Toyota dealer online. And, then traveled to the dealership and picked up the inverter pump (about half an hour later for $116 plus sales tax). I used Toyota P/N: G902047031. Links below of Toyota dealers with this part in stock now.

Thanks for sharing the links, but I’m not sure we can infer anything about the availability of the part from those listings. You’ll notice that the pages are careful not to say “in stock” or make any specific promises about shipment or delivery time; all they tell us is that the part was listed in Toyota’s catalog, and dealers are inviting offers from the public to buy at certain prices.

I don’t know of any Toyota dealer parts-sales website that’s linked to inventory; parts.toyota.com just lists the participating dealers that are closest to the estimated geolocation of the browser’s IP address.

It’s still a good idea to check with local dealers, since some may have the part in stock, even if they don’t advertise this online—but a four-week backorder implies that Toyota’s regional (PDC) and national (NAPCC, NAPCK) warehouses don’t have any on hand to ship to dealers.

Let's be realistic. MANY aftermarket pumps get installed every day, with no problems. If you're willing to leave your car OOC for 4 weeks while waiting for a pump from your local Toyota dealer, then great. Otherwise, buy one for $60 and install it. It will likely last for years.

You can have one for anywhere from $30 to $300 in less than 2 days via ebay... It's just a really cheap electric waterpump. The crappy cheap ones work just as well as the overpriced OEM ones.

Or buy almost the exact same thing for $90 less... Lol... It's just an electric water pump, it's not advanced technology...

The recalled pump was once the most advanced and most expensive design... Says a lot about how uncertain quality can be from part make to part maker. And after 15+ years, you'd think the technology would advance to the point that it's no longer a concern. I've yet to see someone on PriusChat say they're replacing their inverter pump again because they bought a cheap one that failed. For the most part it was just a bad production run of pumps from Denso that cost them money when Toyota issued the recall.

Still, I'd go with the Toyota one and the Asin one, if the Toyota branded Asin is not available. $50 difference in chump change in comparison with the labor charge needed to remove and replace the pump.

As always, we need smart people who say here is what I know after many years of research on always on 12v water pumps and this is the best design and this is the worst design. That's not a car problem, that a fluid pump science problem and we're such a lovely kind of hilarious without that specific knowledge! As always, there's likely a pump that's ten times better for this, but we totally lack the access to the knowledge/access to it.

    Until they don't.
You obviously do not read much here or have selective memory. There are plenty of anecdotes of failed aftermarket pumps. Even more insidious are the reports of intermittent pumps. It seems the Dorman branded ones are particularly unreliable.

But feel free to 'save' a few dollars. For me, I'd just prefer the do the job once and not worry for another 160,000 km.

I've seen three dealer quotes in the last year. They were all over $500.

Me? Cost of pump + $100.

It was ~700 at the dealer. I only took it to the dealer because I broke down in another city and that's the best I could do at the moment.

We refer to them as stealerships... And these water pumps are super cheap and simple and are always on if the car is on... The $30 ones online are near identical to the ones that cost more that $200, which are identical to the one the stealership charges $700 for.

In fact these pumps are so cheap that when Toyota contracted for these pumps the manufacturer saw they could make a huge profit if they made them super cheap and then they ended up failing and forcing a recall... But other than that recall, I've never seen any solid evidence that the $30 pump is any different or less reliable than the ones people pay more than $200 for.
