Wow, I know what a tough job that was. I was a Park Ranger as well with the NPS (probably in that same previous life time :) ), and have seen many vehicle and climbing accidents, also in my current life as an attorney. The Ranger job was the best job in the world by the way............

I'm really glad you are well, and you have a lot to be grateful for. I hope you like your new Prius as well as the '05 that protected you so well.

Talk about stupidity: no license, no insurance, no seat belts, passengers, SPEEDING. Hello??!?!

It's good to hear these "I'm okay" stories. Makes me feel safer being in the Prius.

you don't want to have to replace an airbag that you didn't need to go off in the first place. if there were significant injuries from any occupant of the prius, i'd understand why everyone wants to know. a lot of people think that if you're in an accident that if your air bags go off you're automatically okay. they're meant to deploy as an absolute last resort because they can injure you quite seriously. (hence the name *supplemental* restraint system) why do you think techs *hate* working on or near them?? serious danger.

So the other driver wasn't killed, and is still in the gene pool?

Technically. But a long enough prison sentence should take care of that, too.

Wow. That is a terrible accident. I'm glad you are okay.

My 10 month old 2006 was determined a total loss after an accident on 10/8 when a driver ran a red light and I t-boned her. Good luck dealing with the insurance company about the value of the car. They have offered me 19,700, 21,999 and I am waiting on another offer from the insurance company. My 2007 on order is scheduled to come early November. I am hoping the insurance company and I settle before then. If you want to discuss tactics for getting the actual value of your car send me a message. I have been working them for a week and a half now and have learned a few tactics they try and pull over on you to give you less for your vehicle and I am dealing with MY insurance company.

Glad to hear your OK. In so many of these cases the "other" driver walks away unhurt. I was T-boned by an 18yo kid 9 years ago, he blew thru a light. He walk away, his girlfriend and 9 yo brother were killed. I spent 4 weeks in the hospital and 7 more in rehab. I did not want to thru salt on his parents wounds, but his insurance company tried to screw me. Turned out he did not have a drivers license and his father let him use the car. Needless to say his parents are living in a much "smaller" home. I'm still working, though not that hard.

sorry to hear about your loss. after having my 2004 totaled (although my accident was not nearly so "wreckless") by an insured motorist, in retrospect, it was for the better. i drove a rental car for 3½ weeks and got $1500 more for the settlement than the cost of my Prius.

my 2006 has the options i wished i had on my first Prius and basically cost me about $2200. cant complain at all about that. less than $100 a month to drive my 2004... hard to beat that.

my accident was a glancing blow that took out the entire left side of the car so no airbags deployed or even a major impact for that matter, but time and time again, the Prius always seems to commit the ultimate sacrifice in order to save their passengers.

i hope you have no lingering medical conditions from this incident and enjoy your new Prius!

Like the others, I'm sorry to hear about your loss :( , but am glad you survived. :)

With my insurance (AAA) I have "uninsured motorist" as part of the package. It's really amazing how many are out there. You'd better not get stopped for even a burnt out light bulb as the cop will ask for proof of insurance (at least here in CA).

Philisophically, wouldn't it have been better for the public for the driver to have died at the accident?

It could be what some call a censored data sample. I don't mean that someone is removing the reports that "My car is destroyed, and I'm dead." I just mean that I won't be making such a report if that happens to me.

Strange that on a different forum about a different hybrid this exact point was made.

There are plenty of hybrid-bashers out there, and they would have no qualms reporting a hybrid driver's death.

I thought you had to show proof of insurance in order to get or renew your driver's lic.?

But what stops you from getting insurance, making one payment so you get the proof, then canceling the policy as soon as you have the license?

down here all insurance cancellations are forwarded to whoever in the state govt handles that stuff. i don't know specifics because our cars aren't registered down here, hence it's not my problem. ;)

they threatened me with that when i left progressive though... "but you'll get a $50/day fine"... yeah, not if i've already got other insurance lined up, $(*&#...

Don't know how they do it there, but here in NC, the insurance is tied to the car, not the driver. i.e., to register the car and get plates, you have to have proof of insurance.

Oh my gosh, I'm glad you're okay! Make sure to be extra nice to yourself while you're still a little sore.

I, too, have trouble characterizing this as an 'accident.'

You know how the song goes, "when you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose." It's sad, but sometimes the more responsible among us are left cleaning up the mess.

No, it would have been better for the accident not to have happened. I'm having trouble seeing any "better" for him to have died on the scene, for all possibles values of "better" I can come up with. What are you thinking would be "better" about such an outcome?

In a semi-perfect world, the crazy driver would have had the Fear of God put into him in a minor fender-bender or close call. In other words, impresed upon him he was behaving as a dumb A$$ - not a Bad a$$.

Had a car punted from the curb to the front lawn by a high school punk in the car with a couple of girls he was trying to impress. So pathetic - the officer did not get a ticket because he was crying - loser!!!

    My car was totaled. :(
