Is the whine prominent enough you think you could pick it up on a phone video while driving, down a quiet roadway, at, say, 30 mph. then 40 mph, then 45 mph, with the video showing the speedometer, and post a link here?

Yeah, I could probably get to that. Just need to find a time and place. Thanks.

No, it says to inspect it which is nearly impossible to do so most people/shops just ignore it while some choose to change it.

Shavings isn't good so you could try a fluid change. If there is already damage done than it might not solve the issue.
Just be careful that they use the correct fluid in it.

This might help you understand the "CVT" part better. The transmission uses a planetary gearset combined with 2 electric motors to simulate a CVT.

It "simulates" a CVT in the same way that a front-loader "simulates" a washing machine. If it's a machine that washes your clothes, that's what it is, even if it isn't built the same way as other washing machines you've seen before.

If something has a shaft to be spun by an engine at RPM r with torque t, and a shaft coming out that spins at RPM rA with torque t ÷ A, it's a transmission, and if A can continuously vary over its range instead of being locked to a few fixed values, it's a continuously variable transmission.

Articles like the one linked in #15 come from writers who have only ever seen one way to build a CVT, usually the way with cones and a push-belt. But whether something is a CVT or not depends only on what it does, not how it does it. Even before the Prius design, cones-and-belt wasn't the only way there was to build a CVT.

Just says “inspect” the fluid. Typ Toyota. That said, I would, change it.

my 2 cents: good to change around 12 months or 10k miles.

Transmission fluid change every 10k miles? That seems a bit excessive.

I was able to get the car out today and run some video on the sound so will upload to a YouTube account and post here later today. The car tires were low, so I put air in them but that didn’t resolve anything.

Okay, here are four sound clips I’ve been able to create and upload to YouTube tonight. YouTube limited me to 60-second clips so there are four uploads.

I ran the car up to 20 to about 45 mph in Drive mode along local city streets here, and applied the brakes to a stop. Also ran a test placing the car into neutral and then applying the brakes. Also drove the car in B mode and had a similar whine.
Very curious to hear what everyone is thinking. Many thanks for your input.

for anyone who may be confused, this is a gen 1 in a gen 3 forum.

i didn't hear much sandy, which clip would you say has the most prominent whine, and at what point in time?

Clip 3 has the whirring or whine sound all throughout on accelerating. Clip 4 also has it. You can hear it whine down as the brakes are depressed.
Note that these are new sounds that just began in the car. I don’t drive it much so I started investigating immediately.
Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Hmm, nothing really jumps out at my ears that makes me sure what you're after.

It's possible if you could just make MP3s or the like and upload them here (or in a zip, if the forum doesn't like mp3), there are more possibilities. I've loaded things into Audacity and emphasized different sounds, like "is this the one you mean?".

I used to have a tool called youtube-dl that would let me download the streams from youtube, but there was always an arms race between youtube changing things on their end to make sure it wouldn't work, and then the youtube-dl developers fixing it so it would. I'm pretty sure I don't have any version right now that works.

I probably wouldn't have much time for playing with the audio in the next few weeks anyway....

The repair shop is convinced and telling me I need a CVT rebuild. I’m just not buying into it. First they said possibly the inverter when I dropped it, but they want to soak me for a CVT rebuild. The car is throwing no codes.

No, a local repair shop in my neighborhood. They work on hybrids and other cars.
