Everyone can see your VIN number through the windshield too.... But what can anybody do with either one? I still don't know of a way of researching a license plate on the internet or doing anything with it. I'd be interested in hearing of something I don't yet know about if anybody has the answer because it still looks silly to me to block out a license plate in the internet photos until I know otherwise. It's like when people in California get all upset about their privacy and say that they want to make encrypted phone calls when all they talk about is like you know

Once you upload a photo of your car with a license plate or VIN number on the internet, it becomes a permanent fixture. The license plate or VIN number alone may not be enough to pinpoint all the personal information, but with a little effort if someone is trying to locate you, then address and probably name can be associated with the car fairly easily. Yeah, savvy snooper can probably find out your name, address, phone number, occupation, annual salary, family members, etc, etc, without seeing a license plate number, but it is just another information they can use if available. That is a little different for a car parked on a street. With a parked car, someone must be at that location at that time to see the info. With the internet, anyone in the world can see it anytime into past and present and maybe even future.

I approach everything in life to maintain as much flexibility as possible and to minimize failure modes. That implies analyzing the alternatives and choosing the one that best preserves future choices and minimizes potential for failures. In the case of license plates and VINs, it may be difficult to look people up with that information now, but what if it's not in 5 years? You can't go back and redact what's already "out there." However, if you block them out now and it never becomes possible for everyday people to look you up with that info you've still not lost anything.

    In other words: non-obscured plate/VIN failure modes = 1. Obscured plate/VIN failure modes = 0.

You can 100 percent get an address and name from just a license plate. Along with past addresses and in some cases places that particular vehicle has been.

However the likely hood of that are slim and not due to it being particularly hard

But generally speaking the fees associated from websites that have the resources to pull that information cost money. In some cases over 100 per plate your request.

Unless I'm really tracking someone hard I'm not going to pay that kind of money nor will most people probably. Unless of course you've really done them wrong for whatever reason.

In which case they probably already have your name and general info. In this case a plate number is the least of your worries lol.

With just a first + last name and age you can track down just about anyone fairly easily. Especially if you have prior address info.

This thread is finally going in an interesting direction. It's not exactly a new-flash, that a plug-in hybrid can use little or no gas.

  6. I've got 30,000 miles on mine with a lifetime displayed mpg of just over 80 mpg, which includes a lot of plugging in (at work) since they installed a L1 option in 2019. I have to say though, even without plugging in, I'll often get around 60-100 mpg on cool summer days around town and 40-60 mpg during the winter (where the outdoor temp here can get down to 0F, or about -20C). So, you can expect high mpg for a very long time, plugging in or not... speaking of which, hardly no range anxiety since it's a hybrid, not .
For contrast, the 4x4 that I traded in many years ago had a lifetime fuel economy of 17 mpg. I do not miss that thing...

The new administration wants all money to go to his son because his son is on the Ukrainian oil board. The higher prices go to more money his son gets. When gas prices hit $15 a gallon the Prius is going to be quite the valuable little car

  9. The prius will still be a valuable car, even when or if gas prices go back down to $2 a gallon.

I guess you mean if you stay with a gasser.
My '11 Prius Level 5 w/ATP was a great gasser! But its chronic head gasket issue when north of 200k miles made me sell it with some 'sealant goop' in the coolant. ($2500 to repair a head gasket!?!)
Bought a Bolt. No more gassers for me.
Now I 'never go back' to the Quik Trip.
Last time was to use a restroom and walking past those smelly rollers sealed the deal.
    I will 'Never go Back'!

I don't usually chase high gas mileage, but this struck me as impressive. I flipped to HV before I started to move. After 135.9 miles of driving through southern Oregon (all freeway) with cruise set to 70 MPH it was still showing 60 mpg. That's much better than the 40 MPG or so that my 2002 (gen 1) Prius got on the same route two years ago.

It's generally good to have folks using encryption routinely, even to talk about like you know. Otherwise any time you use it, it's like you're inviting "so why are you using it, hmm??".

First tank on hybrid mode only with a 20% battery (or it won't get any lower mark)!
Yep, getting 72.2 ish on hybrid mode with mixed traffic and roads driving. Using the odometer and gallons as a measure it comes out to 75.3 ish.

However, I do need to verify the odometer's accuracy.
Think I posted this before in the space time continuum but who would ever know.
    Anyway we have options folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe the big battery and electric motor is what is making the difference.
Probably going 70MPH on the death-way may bring it into normal PRIUS MPG range.

But these are real numbers and not fake news. Someone now needs to do an interstate check on a long trip with a 20% battery charge level or the first line at the bottom of the gauge.

When I drove home from the dealer (the first time and the battery was not charged) it ran very sluggish ((53ish) MPG (all interstate at 70MPH)). PIG on wheels.

Was getting 76-78 ish with a full charge per tank in hybrid mode. Problem with that is you use a little battery every time you start the vehicle and the charge state goes slowly down over time.

So that is why I did the 20% test.

I will probably charge the battery 3 times a year to check that box off for operational reliability.
