    Greetings,

A search on this forum correctly diagnosed my car's dying hybrid battery before the mechanic did. Given my ignorance of all things mechanical, and the high cost of replacing the battery, I think it's time I found a newer car.

The question now is: what do I do with my beloved Prius? It's a good car, has served me well for the 8 years I've owned it. 2006 with 214,000 miles.

The Prius brand seems to have a lot of enthusiasts ... it seems like there must be some Do-it-yourselfer Prius fans out there who would be willing to buy a dead-battery Prius at a discount and give her some TLC to get 'er up and running again. Are there such people?

Or would I be better off just trading her in at a dealership?

I don't want to GIVE the car away ... The battery and a wheel bearing are the only issues ... If those get replaced, I bet she'll chug right along for many more miles ... so, I don't want to take a pittance for this great vehicle. I'm not sure what kind of price offers I would get. Paid in the neighborhood of $7k in 2012.

What do you think? Where would I find a good buyer? Private buyer or dealership? Where to advertise? I'm in Northeast Ohio, in case somebody knows someone.

It's a sad day, to be thinking of selling my trusty Prius. Been a good car.

    Thanks!

I might start by seeing what people are selling similar cars for in your area- then make adjustments based on the battery problem.

Thanks for responding Mr guy mann.

I didn't realize when I first posted that there's a whole subforum here for car sales! (Smartphone-only internet user here, didn't scroll down that far)

One follow-up question: if I did decide to keep my car and run it into the ground, could my 2006 eventually be used to donate parts to family members' 2010-2014 Prii? Or are Gen 2 and Gen 3 too different to be compatible?

I can’t speak how similar all the parts are, but I can tell you for a fact all the major parts are different. The 1.8L engine is larger and more similar to corolla 1.8L corolla engines and all the other major parts (besides cheap bolts, and the battery cells) are different. If you’re not a DIY mechanic and don’t already have a list of compatible parts printed out you’ll have a hard time finding justifying opportunity cost of keeping vs selling it. Just sell any car you won’t be using.

If the body is good look at the market to see what you can get for it. Then I’d recommend finding those places that will sell you a battery for $900, and replace it yourself. You will probably get more for it if it’s running well without issues. Worst case you’ll have something you can drive for another 5 years.
