Please help

    Hey Priuschat,

    I have several issues with my 2009 Prius and need some help. I’m student and try to avoid going to a dealership as I cannot afford it. Previously, my car had the codes P1121 and P0420 (catalytic converter was stolen and replaced). Yesterday while the car was running it suddenly shut down. After doing some research on this platform, I found out that the Am2 fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse and noticed that it keeps blowing whenever I start the car. I disconnected the inverter coolant pump and noticed that the fuse is fine. I’m planning to change the pump if thats the possible issue. Do you guys have any recommendations on where to get the part? Also, the whole cooling heating system sounds so confusing to me. I have another prius that needs to be fixed as well. Whats the best way to tell whats wrong with the cars and what parts need to be replaced? Is there a code reader that could tell the specific issue? I’m a beginner but believe that I’m pretty handy and would love to fix both of my cars. Thanks in advance!!

    2 things for sure. Buy the real factory pump not an auto parts store pump which are cheap junk and won’t last long. You can buy the real one online. I use Olathe Toyota there very good.
    New dealer pump at my dealer was $185. There a rip.

    inverter coolant pump

    I just replaced my pump it’s easy if you want to just replace it but you never posted the mileage on your car and it will probably need the coolant replaced in addition to the pump. Read those posts that come up during the search.

    As edthefox said get the OEM part. Toyota Parts Oline is a good place to shop around for the best price and can recommend a dealer near you.
    Many here use Techstream paired with a Mini VCI, VxDiag, or Tactrix Openort 2.0 (if you want to support a local US-made product-more expensive but better quality and faster in use), These are all J2534 compatible USB cables to connect the software to the car. Install on an old Windows 7 laptop or install in a VM on a newer machine. Don't connect the laptop or the VM to the internet, just to be safe.

    Well almost. A good code reader is important for getting you the information you need so that you can figure out what the specific issue is. That part still takes diagnostic skill on your part, ability to read in the Repair Manual, sometimes follow a wiring diagram (manual and diagrams both available as described here), use a multimeter and basic tools, and put together the information you get from all those sources into an understanding of what's going on with the car.

    There isn't a "code reader" that can do all that for you. But you should have one, so you can get the information that you need to do it. Techstream is a good choice, and also has active tests where you can tell the car to do things while you see what happens, and those can also be very helpful in figuring out where a problem is.

    Sorry for the late response. I found an OEM part on amazon for $150 including shipping fee. Before replacing the pump I drained the coolant by removing a 24mm bolt. Then I replaced the pump, filled the tank with coolant and did a bleed with a hose. Now the car starts fine without blowing the fuse. I still have the check engine light on and got the codes p1121 and p0420. Couple months ago the check engine light would come on together with the red triangle and we would fill the radiator cap and the tank next to it with water. Seemed okay to me back then since it fixed the issue but now it seems like a dumb idea. Could this be related to the problem with p1121? By the way the mileage is 250000 and thanks a lot for the help!!

    Thanks for the recommendation, I will order one ASAP since I have 2 priuses that pull the same error codes p1121 and p0420.

    Start the car and then check the inverter coolant tank make sure the coolant has good movement in the tank meaning you have strong pumping action. Mine looks like the coolant is boiling.

    Yeah I see some movement. Thats the tank next to the electric engine right?
