California is really strict regarding smog laws. But it really depends on the smog location. If you go to a mechanic who also offers smog checks, you usually can get away with the visual. DMV smog stations are like the DMV. Paid to be rude, sterile and weird. Anything beyond their check list confuses them and they flunk you. DMV smog stations don't have car mechanics doing the smog check, so they will stick to the script. I have only had to smog my car once since ownership. Went to the mechanic, he plugged my car into the computer, checked codes, printed certificate. Didn't even pop the hood.

because there are some members in here modifying it so it leaks out intentionally polluting, and CA politicians could faint while in office thinking the world is ending in 2032 if we continue to pollute. If every one starts rigging it, maybe next year the world could end so it’s best not to allow it.

I don’t think that’s it. Essentially any addition or modification is a fail (IF they spot it...), regardless how benign or beneficial. The car was approved as it rolls off the factory floor; they don’t have the time or resources to review mods, so just squelch them.

To run with the above: it’d be nice if Toyota took a break from their styling exercises, designed and got approval for a factory installed Oil Catch Can system. It might have to be rudimentary, and returning the catch to the sump. The current design actually has a very rudimentary labyrinth (just behind the PCV valve, draining back to sump, but doesn’t seem that effective.

At least they did take a break from their styling exercises to design and get approval for that.

I suppose it doesn't seem as effective as some with aftermarket OCCs want, but I wasn't in the room when Toyota established the criterion for how effective it matters for the one they designed to be.
