I seem to remember that it was predicted months ago, related to possible widespread reduction of group precautions at the same time a critical mass of non-immune lungs remained available to support the spread.

I've had the impression that the churn out rate of spelling errors, is related to the reproduction rate. While tilting of the play field certainly affects the likelihood have any particular spelling catching hold, a thousand new disease cases per day won't be producing nearly as many spelling errors as disease spreading at a million cases per day.

"spelling errors, is related to the reproduction rate"

This may be so. I think it must be overlaid on the realms of DNA and RNA viruses, which have very different numbers of steps required to turn a victim cell into a virus factory. More steps means more errors. Naively.

We'd be well served by finding expert treatment of this topic.

Is it time for a naive-lung check?

Global infection->recoveries are 166 million (worldometers). Missing asymptomatics and under-reportings, it needs to be increased by some guess factor. I'll call the now naturally immune 300 millions.

Global vaccinations are 2.8 billion (ourworldindata) and that must be decreased because some have been double jabbed. I'll divide by 1.5 and declare 1900 millions to be 'medically' immune.

Total is 2.2 billion persons, so 5.6 billions remain COVID-naive. Even if we are more optimistic than that, half of global lungs remain available. They are unevenly distributed across countries, regions, etc.

This is the playspace for Delta variant and further spelling errors that may become 'popular'. It ain't over.

Source: As Parents Forbid Covid Shots, Defiant Teenagers Seek Ways to Get Them - The New York Times

Teenagers keep all sorts of secrets from their parents. Drinking. Sex. Lousy grades.

But the secret that Elizabeth, 17, a rising high-school senior from New York City, keeps from hers is new to the buffet of adolescent misdeeds. She doesn’t want her parents to know that she is vaccinated against Covid-19.

Her divorced parents have equal say over her health care. Although her mother strongly favors the vaccine, her father angrily opposes it and has threatened to sue her mother if Elizabeth gets the shot. Elizabeth is keeping her secret not only from her father, but also her mother, so her mom can have plausible deniability. (Elizabeth asked to be identified only by her middle name.)
    . . .

    Nice twist.

This father immediately goes to the front of the line for 'Dope of the Year'. How does a decent parent with a rational mind not help his child into adulthood by encouraging her to think and act responsibly on her own and then support her decisions the best he can.

My humble opinion is the main point of this story isn't about vaccinations but about the failure of a family to understand the needs for the parents to emotionally and lovingly support your children as they transition into functional adults. I feel sorry for this youngster.

San Francisco takes COVID vaccine mandate to new level

It's amazing how history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes a little.
100 years ago we had the Anti-Mask League of San Francisco, hard line Seattle mayor Ole Hanson had his mailbox bombed (I don't think it detonated) for closing schools, churches, and theaters.... for two weeks.

Ole was a VERY interesting dude. If you live near San Clemente, you should read up on him and marvel at how many things changed in 100 years, and yet how many things stayed the same.

Some sources say that some three dozen bombings occurred during the 1918 epidemic, and there were VERY robust demonstrations for and against the actions taken by dot.gov in the day.

There was a LOT of intense talk for and against invoking states of emergencies, quarantines, and martial law.
Vaccines WERE a thing 100 years ago and they were ABSOLUTELY mandated in some cases - but not so much for this kinda bug.

1918 influenza vaccines were specifically made from (and intended against) bacteria that (we now know) caused secondary infections. Only bacteria could be discerned and cultured at that time. There may be no assessment of public health benefits from those vaccines.

Viruses were discovered in 1930. There was earlier a post infection treatment against (virus-caused) rabies, which is impressive in its own way. And to belabor a point, the first vaccine (Jenner's smallpox) was against a virus, and was also developed without visualization of its actual target or mode of action.

Speaking of Edward Jenner, a recently auctioned letter

Lot 152 - Edward Jenner (1749-1823). An important

Includes “It contains the Experimentum Crucis & has effectually put a stop to the sneers of those little minded Persons who think everything impossible which does not come within the narrow sphere of their own comprehension.”

It seems we are relatively civil at PriusChat after all :D

Seems the Australian population has become a bit complacent after so few cases getting into the community ..... until recently. Now South Australia seems to be the only state not in some sort of lock down with outbreak clusters appearing in large areas in all states. Not all the Delta strain either, but that is the one causing the most concern .... seems one infection spread has been through passing contact out on a street footpath, no great level of detail but it sure wrecks the 20 min exposure scenario our out touch govt seemed to think was a safe contact period .... so it's now masks on inside or outside until they get this latest outbreak under control and the more heavily populated areas of many states are in lock down for the next 2 weeks .....

the martial law part... requires someone other than politicians writing their opinions down and blessing them as special magic papers , to make it happen. look LOTS if people. this is why I point to the brainwashing on news so much, the politicians don't scare me, the folks that believe everything they're fed, those are the ones to worry about
