If that was the only one, the car needs to be 'reseeded' to be able to program in a new key. That can be done with Techstream, but only when activated with a "security professional" activation key, which is just the same $65 as a normal 2-day activation, but can only be sold to someone listed on the "NASTF Vehicle Security Professional Registry".

That's the official way to do it. I think some here know more about unofficial ways than I do,

Independent auto locksmith shops can generally come to you and do this stuff for a pretty reasonable price.

It’s funny, how jobs evolve but not the title.

Contact a dealer first to get a "benchmark" price.
Then call some locksmiths. Their price likely will be about half, depending on where you live.

Have you learned anything now about keeping a spare key for ANY vehicle with a security system ?
    I certainly hope so.

I don’t think there’s a difference in the registration keys for the Techstream software. Rather, the Security Professional subscription includes access to a separate web page on TIS that allows one to enter a seed number, as shown in Techstream, and receive a corresponding pass-code number needed to do the Smart Code Reset procedure. (See bulletin T-SB-0057-18, “Immobilizer and Smart Key Reset” (PDF), July 6, 2018.)
Third parties have reverse-engineered the system and sell calculator programs or the service of computing pass-code numbers. I don’t have one to recommend, but you can find many offers for these by searching the Internet for “Toyota pass-code.”

When a family member recently needed this done in another state, I looked around for an indy locksmith that was listed there and they made a house call with a quite reasonable price all in for a fob, cutting of the physical key, and the programming to the car. They were of course on the locksmith registry so the regular channels were available to them.

Well the local mobile guy never came through. The car has been at the dealership for about a week now. Their top tech couldnt figure it out last week. The claimed the needed the ASE master mechanic, who just so happened to be on vacation...
The ase master mechanic allegedly came back yesterday and i got the same response "we cant get our techstream/equipment to communicate with your car". They went on to say "there is nothing wrong with your car". We just cant get our equipment to communicate.

Now theyre saying the master mechanic may not have the credentials updated or some shit. Feel like im getting screwed over. Any thoughts???

try another independent key guy. do not pay before the work is done.

there are tons of levels of "ase mechanics" nowadays, basically just another paper cert that means nothing. to the REAL mechanics that actually know stuff, this is not a slam, but definitely interned so to the new crop of guys that think twenty minutes with a cheat sheet is acceptable.

same goes with lock smiths. if you find a good one that says something like "crap, we always have trouble with those, please give THIS GUY a call, he handles that stuff easy" ... you've likely found a really good regular locksmith, and gotten reference to a more updated techy locksmith at the same time. exploit them both to fix your stuff. congrats :)
